    Hi all,

I have a 01 Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 with 80k miles on clock to trade and have circa 6000 to spend, I'm looking for a nice biggish car to cruise up and down from Wex to Dub everyday, any recomendations? looked at an s40 today but couldnt agree price with dealer, wasnt prepared to budge at all.

    thanks in advance.

newwerish avensis with the eco/lean burn engine ??

get ok mpg if you drive her like a taxi...

Thanks for reply SIR, I looked at the avensis and its not really for me, I look at it as too boring or safe or something, I know sounds ironic compared to S40, but I really liked the S40.

In fact I was surprised the garage werent prepared to do a better deal with me, offered me 3,000 for my own and nothing off the sticker price of the S40.

    passat, octavia or A4.

I was in the same situation with a smaller budget few months back. I travel from Carlow to Dublin and I went for a 01 passat.

EDIT: I like the 04 Honda accord too. http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Honda/Accord/HONDA/1041534/

ShayK1, the accord is actually my favourite choice for car but I cant seem to find a dealer with right price that will take my focus.

Mondeo Zetec sounds like a natural progression from your Focus.

Shayk1, 5000 is 500 less than the cheapest same model focus on carzone, it would surely sell at that price wouldnt it?

I did notice that and forgot to mention " he will have to stretch" his finances a little :), especially if he wants a S40 or S60.

Looks v.nice I must say but a few K outside my budget, do people think I would be better off saving more and then looking to buy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,216 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Maybe if you can "offload" yours for around 5k or just over. Go out with the readies in your hand.

There's no such thing as a "Lean Burn" Avensis(unless you count the 2.0 and 2.4 direct injection ones which like all direct injection petrol engines have a "lean burn" model), and there hasn't been a lean burn Toyota for nearly 15 years.

@the OP: I used to have an S40 and I wouldn't have a seconds hesitation in recommending it, because it is a seriously under-rated car. They're supremely comfortable on a long journey, especially with leather seats. Just steer clear of the GDI 1.8(though my one had this engine and never went wrong, but nevertheless they do have a reputation for potentially expensive repairs, as in more expensive than the car is worth) and the diesel if it's the old one, and the 1.6 petrol in all cases and you have a fine car.

Otherwise the Mondeo is hard to beat.

gpf101, if I could get a 159 for the same money as a 156 ide be a proud alfa owner.....

E92, I really like the S40, I think I have made my mind up and I'm gonna wait and save a bit more and go for it, the one I drove yesterday had heated leather seats and was so comfortable to drive, it was the 1.8l se so some nice bells and whistles...

How did you manage that? You'll have to post a few pic's up or a link.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭tw0nk

    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Volvo/S40/REDUCED-1.8I/1042517/

its a 1.8l petrol ,already on trip up using cruise control saw a fairly big improvment in petrol usage over focus.

    I got €5,500 trade in on a '00 1.4 focus a month ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭tw0nk

what was selling price of the car you bought though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,754 ✭✭✭Bluefoam

Selling price was €16k for the car I bought. It was a little on the high side, so room for a good trade in price I suppose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭tw0nk

fair play , you got a good deal there, now is definitely the time to strike if you are looking for a good deal...

A mate of mine arrived down last weekend in a C30 and I couldn't get over how 'special' they are. Silly for a car that's rather nicely put together too.

In any case, you'll forget about it soon enough....Enjoy the car - they're lovely.
