Not sure if here or legal discussion best for this.

How long can a Recruitment Agency hold onto your CV for?
Does the data protection act(s) / legislation mention a certain period?

    Lots of info here: http://www.dataprotection.ie

I don't think there can be a certain period, as this depends on how appropriate it is for an organisation to hold your details. You can't expect eircom to remove all your details after n years if you are still a customer at that stage.

The guideline says "The Acts require that personal data only be held for as long as the purpose for which it was collected remains."

This sounds quite subjective - one could argue that if have found employment, then they no longer need to find you a job, so the purpose for which it was collected is no longer relevant. You can request that your details are erased accordingly.

If you want them to delete your details you can just ask them and they'll do it.

In this case you could, but can you request it from a company who have a valid reason to retain your details?
How many Companies actually completely erase them i wonder..
The last 3 Companies i worked for just made accounts 'inactive'... There's no way of knowing really whether they do or not.

Whenever I got a request in my last company (not recruitment), it was a full delete.

Judging by the amount of emails and calls I get from recruiters who I never gave my details to, I am not sure they are as strict.

Write to them and mention the act. It has worked for me.
