Just noticed there is now an Apple shop in Airside retail park in Swords:

What's the deal with these shops - how are they different to any other shop that sell Apples? Ok, I assume the staff may be a bit more knowledgeable about Apple products, but aside from this?

Hmmm it says PC World Airside though so it's probably just another retailer.

    Well the article says:

Ireland’s first Apple shop has been unveiled at PC World in Dublin’s Airside Retail Park. Apple shops are staffed with experts who can show you the full range of Apple desktops and notebooks, as well as a host of Mac-compatible software and accessories. At an Apple shop, you’re sure to find the Mac that’s right for you. [Jun 30]

Those of us that have shopped in Apple Shops in the UK or US will be spoilt by how utopian that they are; no other shop can ever be as good as an Apple Store:)

Wrong... B&H Photo in NYC is possibly the best store i've ever been in. You could spend the day in it. Much Much better than the Apple store on 5ht Ave

Anyone had a look in here out of curiosity, is it better then the other PC World Apple sections?

Yeah it's like a mini section of an Applestore, they've a selection of Macs but of course it's staffed by PC world. Nice to look at, makes you think you're back in USA or somewhere but it's use is obviously limited i.e. they wouldn't do an exchange under warranty for my broken mighty mouse!

... Sick of companies claiming this.

They are an Apple Retail partner/supplier whatever you want to call it - they are not the first. Theres one in Galway for the last 2 years-ish

I had a look this weekend.
    Not impressed

They have only a few models and when I asked if they would sell a 24" iMac with a nvidea card instead of the ATI card I got a blank stare and then the answer "No".

So it seems to me that they just sell you the basic configurations and that you can't do a BTO.

Can't wait for a real store to open in Belfast.
Anybody has any updates when it will open?

PCWorld don't know anything about anything - even PCs !!! If their staff were that clever they wouldn't be working there. They're salesmen - end of.

Anyone here will tell you that the best place to buy a new Mac is on the Apple website. It's the only way to ensure the most up to date models.

Incorrect - Most are IT students working part time. And theres no need for staff that know everything when your average customer hasnt a clue anyway.

When I worked in PC world I got plenty of geeks coming in trying to test my knowledge with no intention of purchasing....as if the job wasnt annoying enough.

Used to get the same in compustore years ago, there's nothing more annoying than some geek coming in and wasting both mine and there times trying to show off their "expert" knowledge. I've no peoblem helping genuine customers but these guys just take the pi$$.

any of the authorised apple resellers can order a BTO machine for you, the retail stores probably just are not interested. Nobody would stock the non standard config, order them back to back.

Buying in custom build models is generally a lot more hassle for the extra money which the store gets, well unless someone is really specing the hell out of their mac. Thats why a lot of stores won't do it.

Back on topic, PC World are starting (in partnership with Apple) to have dedicated Apple centres, with dedicated Apple staff as opposed to the previous token imac in the corner. A mate of mine did an interview that's how I know, he turned it down as he didn't like the idea of working for DSG.
