Great shots Peadar, bit on the saturated side though. Maybe one step back towards the middle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

The sun was so strong on my monitor that I couldn't see the images properly.
Don't think I upped the saturation though.
    Maybe on the first one.
    Some more on the way.

    Cool nice shots!
how were you connected to the net though?

    Vodafone 3G Broadband.
The eircom connection at drogland is rubbish!

Final score drogs 0-2 Cork City FC.

I think the sun being so low in the sky was affecting the saturation, because I didn't up it for any of these shots.

Nice shots. I think the saturation adss to the vibrancy of the shots. Personally i like them a little over saturated. Personal taste i know.

    Good stuff there.
The last one looks like he's playing basketball.
I presume Danny Murphy was taken with the 300 f/2.8? ;)

At least you know that Fermoyboy must be gagging for a 70-200mm f/2.8 now. :D
One thing about photography, it's a slippery slope, where gear is concerned.
No matter how much you have, you'll always find something else that you "need" and simply must have.
Don't be under any illusions that the 300mm f/2.8 will satisfy your lust! :D

Next will be a 400mm f/2.8. :D Not sure I can afford that just yet.

Mind you, the 300mm f/2.8 with the 1.4x TC works nice, for a 420mm f/4 lens.

But, the slope is steep and slippery.

1st 3 shown here were with the 70-200.... majority of my sports shots on flickr were taken with the 70-200.. city exile kindly lent me his 300 -2.8 for 10 minutes last night.. 10 glorious minutes filled with hope and joy but then tears when i realised it wouldnt fit in my bag and i had to give it back

Harlem Globe Trotters eat your heart out :)

Great photo - some stunners from everyone here. I like the slight over saturation too, just makes the photos beautifully vivid.

hehe, I use PaulW, City Exile and KenSutz as my sport markers!
I know if I can even get remotely close to their sport pics that I've had a good day.

Only looked at a couple but checked your properties and noticed you used 1/640 shutter speed with this picture, is that not very high for subjects that are not that fast?
    What lens were you using?
I am no expert on shutter speed, just curious to see if I've got this right etc

Sure add some to the thread anyway, fermoyboy.
    4, 16 & 18 are good.

Shutterspeed was present last night too.
Hopefully he has something to add here as well.

I'm sure I was using ISO 320 exposure 1/1000 and f/3.2 for most of my earlier shots.

Lower f number and higher quality lens/cam helps though doesn't it?
The iso should anyhow's, like I said wasn't nitpicking just curious and eager to learn.
If it was an action pic ya the faster shutter, just the players hugging was more static why I thought you'd get away with a lower shutter speed.

I'm at the complete beginner end of the scale so don't know whether it was too high or not! City Exile set up my camera in Derry and I just went with that again last night:P

Your shots must have been over exposed in the first half so, because I set your camera for the second half of the Derry game. :)

In response, to Animal, the ideal thing for player shots would have been to use a flash. His shutter speed could have been slower though.

As amateurs (?) how do you guys get pitchside access?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions of sports photographers. How do you get down to the pitch level. Well, there is no short simple answer.

Contacts - Who you know can help. If you know someone in a local sports club then start with asking them. If you know someone in a club organisation, they can help too. Asking around is normally a good place to start, especially for lower league games.

Clubs - Sometimes you can just contact the club directly. Ask their administrators or even their PR person about gaining access. This may not always work, but a direct approach can be best.

League - A league body (IRFU, FAI, GAA) can directly give permission to cover events. In general, this can be a bit more complicated. Showing your ability or a portfolio may be required.

Accreditation - For some sporting events, you need to register for accreditation with third party companies. Again, having a portfolio is a good step, so they can review your ability. I currently hold a number of accreditaions.

Press - If you happen to work for a press organisation, or can submit to an press organisation, they can organise access for you to attend an event. This is generally done on a per event basis.

I think it's only fair to say that you shouldn't seek to get pitchside for a significant game, unless you know what you're doing.
I've seen too many people turn up at games, with their 350D & kit lens, thinking it's all fun and games. More often than not, they get in the way of others, including officials.

If all you're after is a free pass to events, you'll be found out soon enough.
If you're serious, you'll be willing to serve your time at local level, to build up the necessary experience.
