Boot into safe mode and log into the administrator account. From here you will be able to go into user accounts and remove the password.

When you boot in safe mode it still askes for Password.

    ----

The laptop is at home.. It's hard to get a hold of system admin when theres no classes. we are trying to contact someone.

When in save mode you have to log into the administrator account not the account you normally use.

Get Ophcrack, worked perfectly for me before on my mams laptop. Download the live cd, burn to a cd & set cd 2 boot first in the bios. It'll take less than 5 mins.

as long as theres not an administrator password... but definitely the first thing to check, type administrator and leave the password blank.

If there is an administrator password you'll need to reset it. There are a few programs that will do that such as http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

U need to use Nero or Magiciso to burn it as Iso to make it bootable. Sorry, should've explained that

Is it a local or network account?

Just because the Academic staff are gone do'nt mean the IT people are not there. I suggest you contact them before you try to hack the password, they tend to take this type of thing badly.

just get the password reset disk , only reason not to use is you have encrypted ntfs folders but if you ad those you would have made a password backup disk

    http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

Cracks are against the charter over at the windows forum

Is this a college account that you're trying to log onto or a local machine account?

Does the laptop belong to the college or to your gf?

support@iadt.ie does work, I've just sent a test email and got a receipt email back. There is a delay but definitely working. Bit suspicious about this post.

That ophcrack does the trick, learn how to burn it as Iso and set your cd drive to boot first in the bios. You'll have the password in seconds.

Hope everything goes well for your Girlfriend when she leaves back the laptop with a different admin password!

    From this comment
Every now and again the system asks her to change her password.
it is likely that it is a network account that is required. Contact IT support and get it resolved.

...... or, change the admin password, get onto the laptop, cause major grief when the laptop is returned and STILL be unable to log on to the college network.

download a copy of sysinternals and burn the iso to a cdr.
Boot the system of the cd and when sysinternals starts up open locksmith select the account you want the password reset tada reboot the system again.

The college gave the laptop to her. they installed Adobe CS on it and all so she could work on her stuff.

She is just trying to log into the laptop.. Like a normal login.
I didnt see what happened to it. She told me she was using it the day before with no problems. then when she logged on the next day she got a thing saying please change you password... I think she clicked the ignor/cancel whatever button,, and didnt do it.. Then this all happened.

And for the other ppl saying i should crack it... I dont really want to crack it. I could.. but it might get her into trouble.. I'll get her to mail them again. I'll check she is using the right address.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,356 ✭✭✭NeVeR

Just to add she is allowed keep the laptop for the whole 4 years of college.

The way Ophcrack works is to find the folder that Windows stores the password in, unscrambles it, and places it on the screen for you to take down. It doesn't make any changes or leave any traces. If she's simply forgotten the password it will remind her of what it was :D This and contacting the college admin are your only two options I'm afraid, unless she suddenly remembers the password.

The password she used has just expired, that's why she was prompted to change it.

Finding out what it does won't fix it, unless of course she's looking for the admin password...she can then reset it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,081 ✭✭✭BKtje

Usually when a password expires doesn't it just force you to change it before allowing you to login? At least thats the way it works (how we have it setup i guess) on our domain here.
