what is this and will it affect us?
A Note to Google Users on Net Neutrality:

The Internet as we know it is facing a serious threat. There's a debate heating up in Washington, DC on something called "net neutrality" – and it's a debate that's so important Google is asking you to get involved. We're asking you to take action to protect Internet freedom.

In the next few days, the House of Representatives is going to vote on a bill that would fundamentally alter the Internet. That bill, and one that may come up for a key vote in the Senate in the next few weeks, would give the big phone and cable companies the power to pick and choose what you will be able to see and do on the Internet.

Today the Internet is an information highway where anybody – no matter how large or small, how traditional or unconventional – has equal access. But the phone and cable monopolies, who control almost all Internet access, want the power to choose who gets access to high-speed lanes and whose content gets seen first and fastest. They want to build a two-tiered system and block the on-ramps for those who can't pay.

Creativity, innovation and a free and open marketplace are all at stake in this fight. Please call your representative (202-224-3121) and let your voice be heard.

Thanks for your time, your concern and your support.

    Eric Schmidt

Arrrgggghhhh!! I fcuking sick of yanks thinkin they can control everything! What right do they have to say what people can see? Next they'll tell you what you can hear. Who knows maybe they'll have Thought Police before long.

Even if the ISP's dont adopt it over here, if it's adopted in say America, then we can kiss goodbye to a lot of smaller sites that just wont be able to keep running due to lack of traffic.

This is a serious issue. I believe I signed a petition earlier in the year relating to this. In my opinion even if the bill is passed, if there is enough media attention paid to the companies who do exercise this power, people will leave them in droves in favour of companies that dont.

All your internet browsing records are already stored for up till 5 years and from Last week will all digital records be handed over to the Big Brother US Agencies thanks to the European parliament.

Internet browsing as you knows it is now about to become a dangerous and hanging pass time that is well capable of convicting you as being a terrorist.

Thank God I voted NO against the Lisbon Fascist Constitution on the 12 June 2008 and will vote NO again. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jun/30/eu.privacy

The more I think about it even if it does get passed, people will invariably go to where they have the most freedom. Now we all know how much Americans love freedom. they love it so much, they pass laws to limit it and they force it onto other countries. So unless the companies are all in it together (entirely possible) people will go wher ethey can do the most, and companies will have to give people more freedom to entice them back. maybe *just maybe* this wouldnt change much. Alas it will.

Well yeah ofc on an internet forum this is the biggest fish, but to the average American it's economy, economy, economy, war in iraq, abortion and economy, not necessarily in that order. :pac:

Not exactly the same, but quite close: McCain is flipping back and forth, but I think he backed a bill to allow warrant-less wiretapping. Obama is against it.

For some reason, I am inordinately annoyed that google has assumed that every visitor to the page is a US citizen. I think it's the biko effect.

i still doubt there being anyway for them to completely limit things, with p2p and whatnot,im taking the kevin rose approach and saying it wont happen because 1 isp can come along and be net neutral causing everyone to change to that isp, causing the rest to become net neutral again to keep subscriptions

They may have factored that eventuality (rogue isps) into their plans though with some mega strategy, if they're in any way serious about destroying net neutrality.

Obama was against it initially. Then he supported it. And now it's signed into law. I'd support Obama over McCain but he's the one who flip-flopped here.

Looks like they had two choices really, censor themselves or not operate in China. Nobody can really expect them to completely ignore China, with the rapid growth of China it could be business suicide in the long run.

You mean there are people out there who aren't US citizens? Where is this "Ireland" place -- Mom figures it's a small town just south of Kansas. What's goin' on Mr President? 'Bout goddam time we invaded somewhere and made 'em all US citizens. Then the world will be a better place.
