My cousin from Limerick would advise you and all your mates to stick to each other like glue.

One night, his mates went into a chipper on the way home while he stood outside. He was attacked for no reason by a scumbag.Be very careful especially when wearing jerseys etc.

There's a great pub jus a bit down the road opposite the train station.Don't go to the pub directly opposite the train station as it's terrible but the other one has a great atmospshere. You might find a chap called Joe in there. And he's great for a song.

Wow what a great and helpful post.
Limerick is no different to every city in Ireland/Europe.
It has places you avoid just like everywhere.
Great place for a nightout, ask a taxi driver to drop you on Denmark st
has Jerry Flannerys pub, Nancy Blakes and 3 nightclubs within walking distance.
Could also head to Peter Clohessys bar and the sin bin night club.
Clem Smiths and Dolans are within walking distance of there.
Both worth a visit depending on your taste.

Limerick is fine, yes there are scumbags but you're not going to meet them at the match or out in town after the match. It's not too different than pointing out Croke Park is near some very dangerous estates, so what, it rarely interferes with the games.

What type of night out are you looking for? If it's a few quiet ones somewhere likie Myles Breens on Shannon st would suit you, if you want to go to a night club, head towards Denmark st./Cornmarket area. Has several decent pubs and clubs.

If you just want to base yourself in one place all night, head towards Clohessy's pub, has the Sinbin nightclub underneath.

All in all, you should be fine, enjoy the match, I suspect it'll be an easy Meath victory (and I'm from Limerick).

Just to be clear, I've lived in Drumcondra and it's a grand place, but the estates/ council blocks you walk past near the Hill 16 pub (Summerhill maybe?) are rough as most parts of Moyross (which is near the Gaelic Grounds). Maybe the very worst parts of Moyross are worse, but no Meath fans are going to end up there. A lot of the area (and no i didn't hang around long if to learn their names) behind Connolly on the way to Croke Park isn't exactly scenic.

Just my take on it, Hunter, having lived in both Limerick and Dublin.

Anyhow, if the OP has any questions on going out in Limerick, maybe it's better suited to the Limerick board?

No I wasn't having a go I was just wondering where you thought was dodgy.

As a Limerickman I would invite ye to wear Meath jerseys with pride. I have known no incident over the years where someone received hassle over wearing another county jersey. If other poster are happy to jump to a negative Limerick stereotype then I feel perfectly entitled to use a positive one - Limerick people go nuts for sport. We love it. Ye'll be welcome for pints and craic later regardless of the match result.

Ah you're grand.I was genuinely interested in where he thought was dodgy.
Personally I'd find Limerick worse than Summerhill.

Moyross - near the Gaelic Grounds? - Eh! no it's not. Maybe you need to look at a map of Limerick. The Gaelic Grounds is in the rather well-to-do area (IMO!) of the Ennis Road in Limerick. To get to Moyross from there, you would have to cross both Clareview and Woodview (and, at that rate, only possible on foot).

The way I see it, a visiting fan who didn't know the city well has an extremely low likelihood of ending up in any of the reputedly tough estates by accident.

It's near enough, it's not near enough to cause hassle, neither are the sinkhole council blocks in Dublin to Croke Park.

I'm sure they'll be up for it, I just doubt they'll be better than Meath.

Limerick are well up for the match,
I can see them really rattling meath, especially how the last match ended up.
Mickey Ned promised to get the Limerick footballers to Croke park this year

    IrishMike,
Need to correct you on Jerry Flannery's - Jerry's pub is on Catherine Street and really well worth a visit. The Flannery's up from Nancy Blake's is owned by his cousins Seamus and Liam, while the Flannery's at the other end of Denmark Street is owned by Philip Flannery. Others in the city are on Wickham Street - Pat owns it, and Shannon Street owned by Paul. All are sons of the Flannery brothers who opened the pubs originally back in the 1960's and '70's. There is also another Flannery pub in Caherconlish (10 miles outside Limerick) owned by Seamus Flannery, Jerry's uncle. All are well worth a visit and you'll receive a great welcome there.

If I was to recommend pubs in the city centre, I'd say that the Flannery group are great, and worth visiting. Also on the map - Clohessy's on the river-front, Nancy Blakes Denmark Street, Myles Breen's - Shannon St, The White House - O'Connell St, South's - O'Connell Avenue, and plenty more.

As for trouble, it's there if you want it, and no more or no less than anywhere else, no matter what people from outside the county tell you :o. Use the usual common-sense approach to being in a city late at night with a few beers under your belt. Stick to the main drag, and have a really good weekend!

Where would the a good hotel be to stay in( ie close to Denmark st)? Is the pitch far from the city centre?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭lanod2407

There's a hotel close-by ......... this it's called something like the Old Quarter - not sure how good it is - its quite small,
TBH - the centre of Limerick is quite small and concentrated, so anywhere in the city-centre is fine.
Here's a list of what is in the city-centre - I know I'm forgetting some - shoot me!

    Jury's Inn
    Clarion
    The George Boutique Hotel
Hilton - over the bridge from the main area (3 min walk) and on the way to the Gaelic Grounds.
Absoluthotel (spelling may be dodgy!) - slightly off the main drag.

It's about a 20 minute stroll from the city centre, straight out the Ennis Road. If you want to stay in city centre, some of my mates have stayed in the George and thought it was grand.

Correct me if I am wrong, its been a few years since I've been in Limerick but to get to the city centre from the Gaelic Grounds and vice versa,is The North Circular Road the best route?

I never remember been driven into town via the Ennis Road when I stayed in an estate off the Ennis Road and the Gaelic Grounds are on the Ennis Road.

Depends what way you are driving, if you're coming from Cork side, you could go through the North Circular but it wouldn't save you much time. If you are leaving the town centre, easiest and fastest way is straight out the Ennis road.

Limerick will not only rattle them, but they will beat them too. I may be a little biased as i have two relations playing, but this is very much an up and coming young Limerick side, who really should have been playing Kerry today, if they had only kept their heads in the dying minutes against Cork. Meath i think had their eye on winning Leinster this year, and now they find themselves in the qualifiers, they are sure to be a little brittle. Yes they will be favourites, but they were against Wexford too. And this Limerick team drew with Wexford in the league. Meath are definitely there for the taking. And we will take them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

I can see an upset alright. If Limerick play the way they did against Cork and keep their head, they may take Meath. If this game was outside of the Gaelic Grounds,I would be more inclined to see Meath coming out handy enough.

I wouldn't say Meath are brittle but they are susceptible in the qualifiers bar last year when Bray,Faye,Geraghty,Murphy and Moyles were having a good season.I don't see any stellar performances from them this year.If Cooke is on form for Limerick,Meath will have a very hard time but Caoimhin King, Harrington and Cormac McGill are very good defenders. It will be very interesting.

There will be no more than 5 or 6,000 at this game, and in a stadium with a capacity of about 45,000 that will mean no real atmosphere. Add in the fact that probably at least half the crowd will be from Meath, and I don't think home advantage will be that much help to Limerick.

I can't see an upset tbh. Meath will be back at something close to full strength and I'd expect them to be a bit too strong for Limerick. It's not an easy draw for Meath by any means but I'm pretty sure they'll take it over a trip to Ballybofey or Omagh.

Limerick Meath is hard to call. Limerick were better than Cork, and this from a Cork man. Meath fell apart against Wexford. However one big factor is we know a lot about Meath, however we don't know much about Limerick. This could be a terrible game but it has the makings of a great one and I for one will be travelling to see it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

I think Limericks best plan of action would be to play Fay and Geraghty out of space to the sidelines where they would usually kick it out of hope that it goes over.Wexford did this a lot with Geraghty in the second half and he was contained very nicely.

Cork's 'tormentor in chief' Stephen Kelly is out of Saturday week's match, apparently he's damaged some ligaments, huge loss for Limerick. I would not be as confident without him in the team.
