I usually pick up Mussels at the fish stand in either Oranmore on a Thursday or town on Saturday. Have some friends coming for dinner tomorrow night and fancy doing these as a starter. Can anyone recommend somewhere i can get really fresh mussels on a Wednesday?

Have you thought about going down to the seashore tomorrow morning? Then you'd be guaranteed of their freshness.
    :D

For anyone picking their own shellfish, just a word of advice: be careful! At certain times of the year (mainly summer) toxic algal blooms in the water can cause high concentrations of toxins in shellfish that filter the algae. These can cause quite severe food poisoning.
The Marine Institute monitors shellfish toxins on a weekly basis and sometimes closes certain bays to commercial shellfish harvesting if high levels of toxins are found. I think you can contact them to find out if shellfish in a certain area are safe.
Also, its illegal to hand pick oysters, so don't be at that! ;)
