I am looking at a hard disk at the moment that has a partitioned drive which is 3.11 GB in size.
There is only 260 MB free and I need to free more space. There is a file in the partition which is 2 GB in size and is called "FRESTORE" (the same name as the partition). I have no idea how it got there (it says it was last modified on the 12 October 2004).
It has no extension. The OS is Windows XP Pro.
I wonder is it safe to delete it and can anyone tell me how it was crerated in the first place?

I would imagine that its some sort of a restore partition.
Either way I would think it is safe to delete and format the whole disk as NTFS.

what brand of computer is it - might be a clue to what the file is

if you convert the drive to NTFS you could then enable compression and it might save a few bytes.

don't delete the file unless you have resinstall media , it it turns out to be the restore image you may need it in future.

Cheers for the replies. I didn't format it as I was only supposed to make more room on the drive. I did that by cutting and pasting the file to a backup drive in case it's needed again which I doubt it will be.
