    Hi all

Does anyone have any idea what the normal holidays for primary school secretaries are.

Are secretaries usually let go for the summer and if not how many weeks holidays do secretaries usually get during the year in total.

I know that 20 days is the minimum or 8% of hours if part time. I am just wondering what is normal.

    thanks for any advice given

they usually do work even when school is closed

    check the contract

you are entitled to one with 28 days of starting a job, all details like holsand pay etc are covered

Interesting....I have to do up a contract for a school secretary shortly. The person will not get paid during the summer, and their holiday pay will be 8% of hours worked as per the working time act 1997.
Plan is to pay the 8% at Christmas break, Easter break & Summer.

    Does this sound fair?

Or what is normal practice? For obvious reasons, we will want them to take holidays when the school is shut/to coincide with mid terms etc. - the person will not be required to work when the school is shut.

Does all this seem legal & above board?

    Hi Buzz55

During the periods of lay off, when the secretary is not working, they are entitled to sign on. A form needs to be filled in giving details ot hours worked, Bank Holiday payments etc..

In my experience each welfare office ask for different things. One of them requested that the 8% not be paid until the begining of the summer layoff.

    School secretaries do, sometimes

Cheers Paddyo. I think I've filled out those forms for previous secretaries alright.

One further question, if the 8% paid at Christmas does not cover the entire 10 days that the school is closed over that period, can the employee apply to welfare for money then, or is it only during the Summer months?

I think the employee should apply each time there is a lay off. The department calculate the level of payment due and take into consideration the 8%

Bear in mind that the employee is entitled to the bank holiday payments, even though the days may fall over a lay off period, if the employee has been working for a certain continuous period prior to the bank holiday - you would have to look up the details on the web.

yes, bank holidays are covered/paid if the person has worked 40 hours in the preceeding 5 weeks.

    cheers.
