Was driving in to work this morning and noticed a lifesize cardboard cutout of a cop car with a garda leaning out the window with a speed camera at the side of the road....

Is this the new solution to low garda numbers??!!

You just know they are going to be vandalised or stolen! :D

Hell have a moustache, glasses and horns when you see him on your way home.
Alternatively he could be engaged in a high speed chase around Tallagh stuck to the side of a Honda Civic

Funny enough...in Kildare a few miles before the M9/N7

    O yeah that's a fantastic idea:rolleyes:

Until somebody panics, jams on the brakes and ends up being hit from behind...

What's the betting that the sneaky bastards will wait until the locals get used to the sign and then replace it with a REAL cop car:D;)...

Another sure sign of a downward economy, replacing cops with bits of wood :pac:

It's Kildare Town Council's initiative, so it will be only there all right.

Here is the article about it.

What's the point? After the first day people will know it is cardboard and just keep speeding.

Not if they'll be moved around and replaced with real guards every once in a while.

I think they will just be vandalised/stolen.

Is it just the photo, or is the car in mid-air??!!

    Flying garda cars?

Great logic, using that thinking we should take all Garda cars off the road in case people react to them...

Feckin stupid idea if you ask me.

Judging by the amount of cars doing less than the speed limit on the M50 jamming on the brakes when passing the Camera - this is going to cause a big one on the roads of Kildare somewhere.

Accidents are caused by bad driving not speeding and this will cause bad driving.

That's the idea. It means the real cops can show up every now and then and make loads of money in fines.

You'll even ignore flashers coming the other way: "Hah, it's just that cardboard car again..."

    Ridiculous statement tbh.

Dunno where to begin taking it apart.

A copper car made of wood?? Who's the plank who came up with that idea??

Anyone got a photo if it?

I'd like to hear what you have to say about it so ?

Let me guess - the usual RSA rhetoric "Speed Kills Slow Down" bs.

I think this is a great idea - fair play to them.

It beats the balls off guards hiding in bushes and covert gatzo's that do absolutely nothing for road safety.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,632 ✭✭✭ART6

Let's all drive 2-dimensional wooden cut out cars. No engine, no CO2, no VRT:D

Was just thinking that same thing myself!

This was in the paper the other day, it was first introduced in mayo .. or the likes.

It gave me a great laugh personally.

There was something similiar in the UK, but was using a cutout of a motorcycle rather than a car.

    +1

Far more cost effective than wasting 10's of thousands of Tax payers money on real cars with real guards in them, who do nothing for road safety.

I think they are used in the Isle of Mann prior to the TT races's starting, to stop all the wannabe racers killing themselves.

Anyway Kildare's Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh says, its main objective to deter drivers from speeding is in fact working.

This concept has been used and has worked for years in the UK. People do tend to watch their speed & manners when they see a garda car - I'm happy enough with the idea, once they use it in varied locations etc...

I heard on the radio a while back about a similar setup in Oz, except it was a lifesize manaquin (sp?) of a cop. They are so realistic, one trucker was seen pulling up and getting out to have a chat with it.

From the looks of it it would take a few lads to steal it. Looks alot heavier than just a piece of wood.

Well the one on the Clane-Celbridge road looks as if it's speed checking the cows in the field across the road.

The larger-engined ones often do, the 3.0 mondeo in our district has alloys. (Sh*tty looking ones, albeit)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,768 ✭✭✭Bluefoam

    I think its a shame...

you used to be able to recogise a Garda car by the hub caps zip tied to the wheels...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,314 ✭✭✭Marcus.Aurelius

The obvious thing now is the three aerials on the roof, the last one being very short. If you look at the back, you can see the LED repeaters, also on the front wings on the bumper and the LEDs behind or attached to the grill. OR the control box on the centre dash. Or the lights stuck on the dash. Or the guys with the vis jackets driving it.

Honestly, what do you want from us?

I used to love it when 'unmarked' cops only drove dark navy/blue Sierra Sapphires or... Montegos! No wheel trims either. It was fairer back then... And they didn't have any of these silly speed guns and all that nonsense.

Now people seem to pay as much attention to their speedo as the road - can't be good. Surely it's only a matter or time before we get a thread about this with the same results as MadsL's Dorset St. one..!
