Cartoons Then vs Cartoons Now

I guess this thread will be more relevant to the 18-25 year old's more than anyone else.

My favourite cartoons growing up were both Animaniacs (and the spin-off Pinky and the Brain series) and Freakazoid. Both completely off the wall, totally irrelevant, but also tried to teach us morals and lessons without shoving it down our throats. So, basically, what do people think the cartoons nowadays compare to the cartoons back when they were younger?

    And post your favourite moments:

Pinky and the Brain tongue twister

    Animaniacs - Noel

    Animaniacs - Geography

Animaniacs and Pinky and The Brain were both class!! :D
I loved Dexters Laboratory aswell - it taught me how to make blackcurrant flavoured ice-cubes!! (I would never have thought about pouring blackcurrant squash in an ice cube tray without that revolutionary show)

One night while bored on YouTube, I found the Pinky and The Brain theme tune in different languages! At 3AM, I found these absolutely hilaious.

    FRENCH (Minus et Cortex)

    GERMAN (Brain sounds fantastically evil)

ITALIAN (Il Mignolo col Prof....no idea what their "narf" word is!! :D)

JAPANESE (Listen to the NAAAAARF at the end)

RUSSIAN (They have their own for "narf" - "bilyak"!! :D)

SPANISH (Pinky y Cerebro ro ro ro ro... :pac:)

Cartoons then (in my case mid-80s to early 90s) were a LOT better than the rubbish kids are left to watch nowadays.

    Examples:
    - Transformers (before any crap Pokemon-style animation influences)
    - Mask
    - Inspector Gadget
    - Thundercats
    - Bravestarr
    - Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors

(thank you Sky Channel and Fun Factory :))

    - Batman (early 90s version that was on RTE 2)
    - Spiderman (again 90s version)
    - Gargoyles
    - Classic Looney Tunes (Roadrunner being my favorite)

... now compare that to stuff like:

    - Pokemon
    - Spongebob Squarepants
    - New Transformers series
    - etc

They just don't make 'em like they used to! :(

Great thread. I loved the following off the top of my head:

    - Animaniacs
    - Transformers
    - Teenage Mutant Ninja (Hero) Turtles
    - Captain Planet
    - Batman, Spider-man, Gargoyles
    - Biker Mice from Mars!
    - Tiny Toon adventures ('We're tiny, we're toony, we're all a little loony')
    - Chip n' Dale (Rescue Rangers)
    - Back to the Future cartoon
    - Earthworm Jim
    - Care Bears ('Care-A-Lot is a place we all can go, whenever we choose it')

I'll give a special mention to these three though. Firstly Babar which as a kid I loved...

Plus James Bond Junior! The guys know what I'm talking about here!

'Look out he's coming through, he's got a job to do, while he rescues the girl!'

And who amongst us could forget Bouli! I remember me and my mother used to watch it together and laugh at bits that sounded like the word 'f*ck' such as focal etc. Happy times. Love that theme song! 'Bouli, Bouli! Bouli, Bouli!'

Cartoons back then were BRILLIANT and I don't think this is a nostalgia thing at all. Seems to me modern cartoons are rubbish. Has anyone seen the modern versions of Batman and Spider-man for example? Pieces of sh*t the both of 'em.

If I ever have kids I reckon I'll show 'em the cartoons from the glory years. :pac:

Oh Loony Tunes were brilliant! My favourite was Daffy Duck, but I loved Coyote and Roadrunner aswell. And Bugs, and Taz.....if a Looney Tunes cartoon came on TV I'd definitely sit down and watch it!

I was still young when Pokemon came out and I must say I loved it! I used know the names of all 150 in numerical order :)
Then as I got older I lost interest.

Animaniacs was probably my all time favourite though. Here are a few of my favourite "bits"

I'm in the same boat as everyone, more of the same really
    • Animaniacs
    • Pinky and the brain
    • Spider-Man
    • Transformers
    • Biker Mice From Mars

And the best ever programme in TV history was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!! It's on some mornings on the Den, if I'm up early I'll watch it.

Anyone else think that kids are being deprived as to what standard of cartoon that they are watching?

I have a little brother and sister and the cartoons they watch are complete ****
    • Ben 10
    • Yu Gi Oh
    • Matar (or something?)

These are just a few, I would like them to watch the same sort of stuff I watched while I was growing up but when there friends in school are watching these sorry excuses for cartoons there is no getting around it....

I can't stand to watch any of that anime tripe seems to fill the cartoon channels, stick to the classics.
Both great intros and had a decent run.

    Cadillacs and Dinosaurs

    Defenders of the Earth

First off, I'm a big animation fan (Just see some of my posts :) ) However, I'm 30. Too old for most of the stuff ye were on about: Mask, Jayce etc. I remember them but wasn't into them. But I am probably the right age for Transformers and all those early 80s stuff. They were great at the time I suppose because of the age we were. most of the stuff was terrible toy adverts: He-man, Thundercats and all that. But, you are right in one way though. There were some standout shows in the early 90s: Animaniacs, Tiny Toons and, of course, the ultimate: Batman. But, if you are really honest, there are only about 3 or 4 which you could honestly call classics. The same now. Most is s**t that's just there to sell toys. The animation is better now because it's mainly digital but most is still crap. However, there are, again, some standouts. (IMHO of course). also, I'm not counting anime which I believe is aimed at a different core audience.

    I personally love Spongebob
Avatar. Superb animation for a TV show and, surprisingly, an involved story arc
    ummmmm
    ammmmmm

A severe case of nostalgia with rose tinted glasses going on in this thread. I'd say that for the most part, cartoons are of the same quality now that they were in the 'good ol' days'. As TheIrishGrover said, most of the 80s giants like MASK, Thundercats and He-Man were made specifically to sell toys. I watched an episode of MASK recently and found it laughably bad. The script and voice acting were all pretty rough. Likewise with the X-Men animated series, which I used to watch religiously when younger.
I don't really know any of the popular cartoons nowadays but I seriously doubt they are in any way better or worse than the crap I watched as a kid.

The only exception that I can think of that I would still hold in high regard is Batman: The Animated Series.

Yep. A lot of the older cartoons are utter muck when you go back to them.

The good cartoons these days have animation and scripts miles beyond anything we could have imagined back in the old days.

Here's a pretty neat collection of some of the best moments from Justice League Unlimited:

I'd have to agree with the last couple of posters here. As much as I loved the old shows when I was younger, seeing them now usually brings a harsh dose of reality. Animation, voice acting and dialogue are usually shockingly poor for most of the 80s and 90s shows mentioned above.
I'll still remember them (and their accompanying toy-lines) fondly, but I think the trick is NOT to watch them again when older, cause it just ruins the illusion of their greatness.

I think that in general, cartoons today are far more sophisticated (both technically and creatively) than the shows we idolised as kids.

Still, there are a fair whack of older cartoons that I can still watch and fully enjoy: Batman (as opposed to "The Batman"), Superman, Justice League, The Critic, Invader Zim, God, The Devil & Bob, The Tick, Star Wars: Clone Wars and Gargoyles (wish they'd release more DVDs of that show already!!). The only cartoon still in production that I could watch again and again till my eyes bled with happiness is Avatar. Although, if I were to include syndicated prime time cartoons, then my list would be longer (Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park etc).

(Had to add in a few more shows there after a lil think!)

Yeah, good call on that. I'd actually remembered it but kind of thought of it as a more modern cartoon. The writing was very good on that and, especially from the second season on, had a very interesting story arc. What was interesting was that they kept most of the voise cast from the Batman TAS and Superman TAS series from the 90s. IMO Kevin Conroy is the ONLY voie of animated Batman. When you look at it though. The one cartoon that seems to come up the whole time is Batman. I have the series on DVD. The writing is AMAZING. How they got away with so much I don't know: Characters dying, all the suggestions that Batman was at least as screwed up as the bad guys, and the FILTH :) the whole Harley-Ivy thing. Some of the dialogue between Harley and Joker "Wanna rev up yer Harley? Vroom vroom" and there was one involving a stunt woman and the innuendo was pure filth (Reccommend looking it up :) )
But, yeah, throw away those rose glasses and watch a bit of JL (Repeated often on Cartoon N/work), Spongebob, avater
