Well if this is true this will be great get some games i missed!

But what does this mean about the 40gb's? because they don't have an emulation in them yet?!

Emulation in the 60G European PS3 was always software based (as opposed to in the States where they actually had a mini PS2 chip on board), so it wouldn't be too difficult for Sony to ship the emulator with each game as part of the executable.

This also means they can support just the games they sell, so they can get the emulation perfect for each game rather than having to worry about supporting every obscure PS2 game out there.

Well it certainly has potential, if true!

Didn't the euro 60gig have part of the ps2 hardware in it? Just less than the american.

No was software based in the euro version, common misconception over here!

then why isn't the 40 gig backward compatible?

then why isn't the 40 gig backward compatible?

Cos Sony weren't selling enough PS3 titles. People were buying their PS3s and because it cost so much, they were holding off on buying PS3 games and just using their PS2 library to keep them going, until they raised money.

    Possibly...

then why isn't the 40 gig backward compatible?

    Well,
there was a bit more than that to it..
The original launch Jap and US machines (20/60gb) launched with all PS2 hardware complete (including the Emotion Engine)........The original EU 60gb launched with the PS2's core support chips in place but minus the Emotion Engine component to cut down manufacturing cost..
Software emulation was required in order to play PS2 games that exist on the compatibility list.....not quite up to the original machines but more than decent..

The 40gb machines that launched afterward (in all territories) do not contain all the support chips or Emotion Engine so current software emulation using the above method is a no go..
The NTSC 80gb models which launched later can still use software emulation for PS2 titles though, as they are similar in component build to the EU 60gb..
The hope would be that Sony would release the 80gb model over in EU alongwith software emulation support, but nothing has ever been confirmed..

If Sony went ahead with downloadable PS2 games on the PSN, it could splinter the target group.......i.e. only 20/60/80gb models compatible..
Failing that they would have to supply a complete emulator in software for all owners........not necessarily out of the question as the PS3 has more than enough grunt for that, and it may well be the only option if Sony go down that road as they look to phase out PS2 support in hardware completely primarily for manufacturing cost reasons..

Thats what i figured and why i said

Was just following up on cabrwab's post that that was a common misconception.

News to me I must admit. I thought not having 40gb playing ps2s was a direct cost issue, not an indirect cost one.

The fact that they're denying it doesn't mean that it's not true. It seems to be the norm for these companies to deny something until they're actually ready to unveil it these days. I think they'd be stupid not to implement this myself!
