Which rifle in your opinion?

A question for deer hunters, however all opinions appreciated.

I am going to take up deer hunting in the near future & I'm looking to choose a rifle which best suits i.e. the .243, .270 or the .308.

There is no issue with the stalking licence or the licensing of the firearm, I just don't know which one to pick.

What made you choose your particular calibre & how do you rate it? Make & model and price of rifle, if possible?

What type of ammunition do you use and what grain etc & price of ammunition?

I'll be trading up my CZ .223 so that will help with the bulk of the cost of the rifle.

    Thanks in advance.

I have use both the 243 and 270. Both are excellent choices. Both are flat shooting. Bullet choices are of huge importance with the 243 ie 95 grain sst or more. Some people will argue that a 55gn round will do the trick if an animal is necked and they are right but the spine is much smaller than the neck!

the 270 is awesome i fire a 110gn vmax by norma (shoulder and neck) it kills well. I have shot hinds stone dead (shoulder) at 450 yards i wouldnt dare take this kind of shot with a 243 (probably capable in the right hands, not mine!)

Buy a tikka t3 lite stainless in 270 (1000 euro) and put a t8 (300 euro) on it you wont be dissapointed. Put an s and b 8x 56on it (800 euro). To say that one caliber is more accurate than the other is silly. The 270 kicks more the 243 is better suited in a dual role ie fox and deer! but my 270 is just about able to kill the odd fox!!

i use a 6.5x55 for deer, im gonna trade it in for a tikka of some sort, the 6.5 drops very quickly at long enough distances do tikka do a .243 factory threaded rifle?

if your starting off you wont go far wrong with a 6.5x55
ammo is readily available and the dealers will always have plenty of different makes.
personally i use a 25-06 for deer with 100gr nos ballistic tips, really flat shooting and everybody will say its a .243 with a bit more bite.
90grain winchesters would also be suitable in the 25-06

85gr ballistic tips are available in 25-06, so it can be a dual purpose firearm

most of my hunting friends and myself shoot 25.06, 270, and 243 in mostly sako 75s and some tikka s . the tikka T3 is by far the best value hunting rifle on the irish market been a novice go for a 270 or 25.06 there flat shooting and hard hitting you will not go wrong . A T3 can be got new for about 900 euro i know of two 6x42 one a zeiss one S.B in v good nick for less than 400 euro ,You will have to get hunting/stalking permission also .go to some one you can trust to look after you .and shop around best of luck jw

yes visit www.tikka.fi get a stainless though set trigers are also available but the factory triger can be adjusted down to a nice 2 pounds

308 is good too,if you have big Red deer in your area.If and when reloading becomes manageable and dooable here,it is an easy enuff cartridge to load up or down for different game animals. If you are of smaller statue go a smaller calibre.I like the 243 as it is a nice flat shooter.

I use a cz 6.5x55 and would recommmend it highly..Its recoil is very low and knocks em flat using 140gn federal powershock...
You should be able to pick up a cz 550 6.5x55 for around 850-950 quid...
The triggger in the cz 550 is the same as you cz 223 as you know it is fully adjustable ie.creep, pull weight and over travel..And it will shooot half inch to 3/4 all day at 100yds..the energy at the muzzle for 140gn power shock is 2650 foot pounds and at 400yds is 1900foot pounds...More than enough...

    Lads,

Thanks for all the replies. I am going to research all the calibres mentioned as I want to do this right. I am already looking around at different types of rifle and swinging towards the .270 at the moment. I like the look of the Tikka T3 and will have a feel of it when shopping. I am also looking at the .308.

    Thanks again...
