Just watched this on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DGoakb8jYE

Basically it is a recording of the RTE 2 TV night shutdown in 1985. The news summary follows it and describes the upcoming Anglo-Irish Agreement and the laying off of over 200 workers at a dairy, following the economic downturn at the time.

Great to watch and there are a lot of these on youtube, shut downs and ads....very informative and puts today's Ireland in perspective.

Used to love the music to GP. Wasn't it like a mad bodhran solo? :)

They tried to make it sound a bit like the start of the Hawaii 5-0 theme.

It was more like someone on acid attacking an oil drum with a couple of sticks.

Don Coburn...now there was a newsreader.

Ah yes, the eighties, we were happy, yet miserable. These days we're rich, but insecure.

Ah yeah, used to love the theme for that! And the guards used to have the most magnificent moustaches!

And the award for "strangest hair" goes to Rev Dr Dennis Cooke.

Interesting too to see the tv closing down at 1135pm. It's 105am now, I've work in the morning and I'm still high as a kite.

I used to think 'Closedown' was a programme.

It saw it listed in the Evening Press, every night, after I went to bed. Just once I wanted to saty up and watch it because it was on every channel. So it must be good.

Yes, so was the news, but I didn't think like that...

EDIT: What? No fvcking national anthem...? Estabancambiaso will hit the roof!!

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

There was a programme about 1980 broadcast by RTE a couple of years ago. Think it was hosted by Gerry Ryan. Clip of Garda Patrol on it (including opening drums!). I have it at home somewhere - will try and find it.
