Don't forget everyone, a laser designed to be mounted on a firearm is subject to the same restrictions as night vision sights and silencers, so possession of this item will require authorisation from your local Superintendent.
Here's the relevant legislation-
Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990, Section 4,(1),(g),(i)-
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1990/en/act/pub/0012/sec0004.html

in reply to moderators responce i found this.....

its from an airsoft site but i think its relates to this thread....

http://irishairsoft.ie/?p=109

"(i) Lasers of less than 5 milli Watts in the light frequencies of 630 to
680nm would not be
considered to be firearms in accordance with Section 1(d) of the Firearms"

definition of a class IIIa laser:

Class IIIa lasers are continuous wave, intermediate power (1-5 mW) devices. Some examples of Class IIIa laser uses are the same as Class II lasers with the most popular uses being laser pointers and laser scanners."

taken from:

http://ehs.uky.edu/radiation/laser_fs.html

maybe its my misunderstanding but should this item be placed on an airsoft ( id like to say firearm but there not in my opinion) piece of plastic than a permit would not be required.

gunhappy, there is opinion (and it's only opinion, it's not been tested in court) that says that it's okay for airsoft toys in Ireland; but that's airsoft. Which are not firearms. If you mount a laser on a firearm in Ireland, you need a licence for it from the local Super, same as for an NV scope or silencer.

sparks.... its up to the buyer as to what they put it on.... if they wanted to use it in for there powerpoint presentations thats there decision.

now back to the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990, Section 4,(1),(g),(i)- in particular (i) as it states that i firearm is:

"telescope sights with a light beam, or telescope sights with an electronic light amplification device or an infra-red device, designed to be fitted to a firearm"

the definition of a "telescope" is "a optical instrument using lenses or mirrors or both to make distant objects appear larger when viewed through it"

This does not effect laser/lights as the M6X laserlight cannot magnify anything nor can it be looked through to view anything it cannot be put in this classificationad by definition it does not fit ...

bearing in mind that this is the firearms act from 1925 to 1990 i think its a bit out dated and as were all still awaiting the new legislation to come in we'll have to see.

Sure it's their decision. It's just that if they put it on a firearm, they need permission from their local superintendent.

Sorry, it does apply.
Firstly, the 1990 act has been superceded. For the record, the current wording as amended is:
(g) except where the context otherwise requires, any component part of any article referred to in any of the foregoing paragraphs and, without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing, the following articles shall be deemed to be such component parts:
(i) telescope sights with a light beam, or telescope sights with an electronic light amplification device or an infra-red device, designed to be fitted to a firearm specified in paragraph (a), (b), (c) or (e),
(ii) a silencer designed to be fitted to a firearm specified in paragraph (a), (b) or (e), and
(iii) any object—
(I) manufactured for use as a component in connection with the operation of a firearm, and
(II) without which it could not function as originally designed,

Lasers sights are caught by (i) and by (iii). And we've asked the same people who gave you the opinion that laser sights on an airsoft are fine, by the way, and the response was rather direct - yes, laser sights on a firearm need permission.

On top of which, by the way, that list in (g) above is not exhaustive. Which is often overlooked. The reference is to component parts of a firearm and if you're attaching it to a firearm without using duct tape, it's a component part pretty much by definition.

(Laser boresights, by the way, get around this because using the firearm with the boresight in place isn't possible. At least not without some seriously interesting post-accident photo opportunities...)

No offence, but can ANYONE sell anything on this forum without it turning into a legal debate. Its up to each individual user to remain within the law, fair enough people should be informed but look at what happened the reloading press thread. Its not the mods job to ensure everyone buying anything on this forum uses it legally, thats down to the individual. It gets tiresome.......

I totally agree with astraboy. Would it be a good idea be for a seperate thread to be created dealing with the legal side of firearm restrictions in ireland. maybe there already is one but it would help.

In fairness, there was only a short reminder from Rovi about it. It only turned into a debate when it was challenged.

The very fact that there are debates shows that some of the buyers and/or sellers don't know the law on what they're buying. The mods can't enforce that people use the stuff they buy legally but we can damn sure try and limit boards.ie's exposure to flak when some eejit standing up in court and saying "but I bought it on boards.ie, they didn't tell me it was illegal". You might say that kind of thing is far fetched, but look at the top of every single forum on this site and you'll see a sticky that demonstrates quite how stupid the law in this country is with regard to posting stuff here.

There are plenty of threads containing that. IMHO one thread is not enough, given the complexity of firearms law in Ireland. All threads discussing firearms law should be either in the main Shooting forum or in the Legal Discussion forum. Mentioning firearms law relevant to the discussion is perfectly valid in all threads as far as I'm concerned.

TBH I'd be much happier if there was no "Shooting For Sale/Wanted" forum. If we modded it strictly according to the rules (the way all the regular adverts.ie ads are modded) we'd have no time to shoot and half the forum would be banned and the other half would be whining that we're jackbooted thugs.

On top of what Conor's already explained - far too politely, to be honest, but give him another few years of dealing with the same thing week in week out and that will change :D - astraboy, patrickdt, would you please note that the thread is still open and undeleted, that the original poster hasn't been in any way penalised, and when you've taken note of those facts, would you look up the term "due diligence" and try to understand how it would apply to moderators in this forum?
Thank you...
