Hi all, long time poster but going unregistered for this one.

I've just finished my degree, going on to do a masters in september. That's not really the issue, i like college and looking forward to going back.

I work part time in a bookmakers, i have done for 2 years. Lately it is making me miserable. I absolutely hate it, i feel like crying when i think about it. They totally use me there, working on my own, stupidly long shifts, not finished till ten every night & being there from half 9 in the morning, working all weekend, every weekend, working 60 hours on the trot...

But- i really need some money. I have a loan to pay back so i need a job. I'm terrified i won't find another job for the summer so i feel like i'm stuck.

I really feel stuck in a hole, i'm so miserable. I don't seem to do anything besides work. I can't sleep at night and i've been so teary lately. I honestly don't know what to do.

I just need some advice, i don't think i can go on feeling so crap. Is it worth being miserable to pay back my loan (which isn't all that much but needs to be paid back soon)? or should is it better to quit and hopefully improve my mood? What will i do with myself if i do quit? I'm miserable and confused and hope you can give me some advice.

It sounds to me like you're overworked and simply exhausted. Your mood is greatly affected by how much sleep/rest you get.

I don't know much about maximum hours p/week but 60+ sounds excessive to me. Try to speak with your bosses to see about relief/breaks and at least 1 day off.

Work life balance is very important - so is your happiness. Good luck

At the risk of sounding over simplistic - is your job in the bookmakers the only part time job out there?

    I bet it isn't.

Talk to your bosses and say how unhappy you are.

    Things don't change? - Leave!

One things for damn sure - you can't carry on the way you are.

OP have you actually gone looking for another position? There are a good few bookmakers around the country, might you be able to work for a diffrent one? If not, well you have tonnes of experience of handling, cash and dealing with customers as it is, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to get another job, maybe in a shop or something?

It definitely sounds like you're over-worked, and over-stressed. Working those kidns of hours gives you no chance to unwind, and get some proper rest. You're constantly working, little social interaction, and all you have to think about is paying back your loan. On top of which, since you're probably not oscialising much you have no-one to talk to, in other words little chance to vent and therefore manage your stress.

I would strongly suggest looking for another job. If you just too stressed to juggle your current job, AND looking for a new one, then definitely leave your current job. Maybe talk to the bank about re-structuring your repayments? Perhaps reducing them for the next 2/3 months until you have another job?

This kind of stress is bad for your health OP, you need to either switch position to allow yourself to manage the stress better, or remove yoruself from that position altogether to let your head reset itself.

Lastly, the way you describe your current job sounds like how they're treating you is actually illegal? I'm no expert on employment law, but you should take a look at your original contract and see EXACTLY what kind of hours/working conditions you agreed to. It's unlikely the contract allows them tot reat anyone like this. So have a look, and once you know exactly what you agreed to, start saying "no" when they're throwing you extra shifts, and expecting you to work ridiculously long hours.

I used to work in a bookmakers, and I know that during the summer months you can have race meets that go on well into the evening, but this is only maybe 3 months of the year, why on earth would you need to be there until 10 any night outside of this particular window?

OP leave that job it's making you miserable. Find another position you sound like you're suited to retail. We all spend too long in work to do a job that makes us miserable....

NOTHING is worth making you feel like this, find somewhere you'll like and be appreciated

I work part time in a bookmakers, ......... working 60 hours on the trot...

    60 hours is NOT part-time! I don't suppose you're in a trade union?

Put limits on the number of hours you work. Earn enough without killing yourself. You need to have a life too.
