I brought this topic up on several threads about the potential dangers of transit smart cards / RFID Easy toll passes and what all this could lead to. Several posters disputed my claims as conspiracy theory material. however a recent leaked document would prove otherwise.

"American authorities will be able to obtain greater access to private information such as credit card transactions, internet browsing habits and travel histories of people in Europe under a deal being finalised by European Union officials".

"an internal report leaked to The New York Times yesterday said the EU was on the verge of agreeing to give US law enforcement and security agencies information about all EU citizens". (Times on Line 29th June 2008)

The ironic thing aboute all this is that NO terrorist organisation will use any track and trace device such as a credit cards, RFID Toll chip or smart transit card while there is a still a cash alternative availible.

The stupid ones will, but they tend not to be very "successful". However, as the stereotypical fundamentalist Muslim terrorist doesn't use credit cards (interst is banned under Shari'ah law) and indeed credit card usage is much lower in Europe than the USA, the perceived security gains are lower than expected.

While I understand your privacy concerns, there are also convenience benfits to travel smart cards. Just like there are convenience benfits to including your address and phone number in the phone book.

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

It just gives us a taste of what Europe is capable of doing and this is even without any treaty being ratified. God help us if this European constitution ever gets passed.
