I'm pretty sure the rule is that you can't sign on for 6 months after you leave school, so you're snookered for the time being as far as dole goes.

And why can't you get a job? What's to stop you? Plenty of jobs out there if you look for them. Register your CV with all the recruitment agencies, and with the online job sites like monster.ie, recruitireland.com, jobs.ie etc. Send your CV to lots of employers and something will come up.

And btw this question would probably be more suited to the work and jobs and/or state benefits forums.

You should at least find some useful links in there.

I'll assume that this is a moved thread, but I want to make it perfectly clear that on State Benefits these sort of statements are not allowed, although aidan did help by listing some websites. Remember attack the post not the poster?

To answer the question, the time limit on taking up Jobseekers Allowance (I'll assume the o/p is not an insured person and cant claim Jobseekers Benefit) is not so much that you cant claim for the first few weeks, it is more that it takes time to set up up on the system, and for you to be means tested and to register with Fas. When you are waiting, you can claim Supplementary Welfare Allowance from your local Health Centre. This is an entirely discretionary payment it is up to the Community Welfare Officer as to how much, if anything, you get.

To get Jobseekers Allowance, you must be available and activly seeking work. You must register with Fas. Depending on the attitude of the local Social Welfare Services Office you may have to prove, by way of copy CV's and letters to employers, that you are seeking work.

It may be the case that for medical reasons you cannot fullfill those criterea, if so you should Claim Disbility Allowance, for that you need to produce medical reasons by way of a GP's report, and you will also be seen by the Department's Medical staff, who will assess the degree of disability you have and payments will be made on a sliding scale accordingly.

Are you sure? I'm pretty certain that people just finished the Leaving Cert can't claim for the first 3 months or something like that.

    From the INOU booklet.
    Student Disqualifications

A person is disqualified from receipt of JA for any days in which they are attending a full-time day course of study, instruction or training at one of the following institutions:

    a school,
    a university,
    a college of a university,
    a Regional Technical College
    an Institute of Technology,
any institution to which the National Council for Educational Awards Act, 1979, applies,
any other institution to which the Local Authority (Higher Education Grants) Acts, 1968 to 1992 apply,
other institutions as may be prescribed by the Minister from time to time.
    SECOND LEVEL STUDENTS
    (a) Second level students who complete Examinations :

The 3 month disqualification period for receipt of JA commences on the day following the last examination. This date will vary from student to student. It is incorrect to apply a disqualification period with a common start and end date for all cases. e.g. 3 months from 26 June to 26 September.

This disqualification extends for 3 months after the person has completed the Leaving Certificate Examination or for 3 months after the person finally leaves full-time second level education (whichever is the later).

    (b) Students who do not sit Examinations :

Students who leave second-level education without completing the Leaving Certificate are disqualified for 3 months from the date of leaving school. Written verification should be sought from the school confirming the date of cessation.

    (c) Repeat-year students :

Students disqualified for receipt of JA for 3 months following completion of the Leaving Certificate, who resume studies or who repeat the examination the following year, are subject to disqualification in the repeat year.

Thanks for that dresden8, because looking up to give the answer on the Department Site and Citizens Information failed to give me that.

hi i was just wondering since u cant apply for jobseekers 3 month after you leave school fo you get any back pay??i want to move out and if i would know that inwill get back pay for the 3 months of waiting it would be great thanks :)

no you arent entitled to claim the doelf or 3-6 months after leaving school and you wont et any back pay for that time.

And also you do ned to be very aware of your entitlements as being a school leaver it is only 100 euro or so a week is all youll get anyway.
And in alot of counties they are stopping rent allowance unless its an emergent case, eg a family who loses a job and is already renting and would be homeless without the assistance. So you would have to get onto the housing list which takes up to 12 weeks in some counties, and then apply for hap.

You are much better off to even get part time work as youd earn more than the dole pays.

If you are just finished youthreach then you can get jobseekers allowance. You dont have to wait 3 months.

This. If you left school or college there is a wait before you're eligible. If leaving youth reach you don't need to wait but the actual application might delay things and that's why arrears are paid then.

omg they told me i have to wait for 3 months so i applied 3 months later and i got a letter saying i will get 102 euros every week and they wont give me back anything that they own me for the last 3 months

If they told you you have to wait then they don't owe you anything. It's only if you applied and then had to wait for your application to be processed that they owe you arrears. If they said you had to wait to apply then there is a disqualification period.

    Students
If you have just left school [this refers to secondary school not college] you cannot get Jobseeker's Allowance. To get Jobseeker's Allowance you must have been out of school for 3 months and you must be at least 18 years of age.

Third-level students cannot claim Jobseeker's Allowance or Benefit while they are studying full-time. This disqualification also applies to the summer holiday periods between academic years (unless you are a mature student). However once you have finished college permanently you can claim a jobseeker's payment if you cannot find work. This is also the case if you leave college without finishing your course.

The 3 month disqualification rule does not apply to Youthreach participants

Did you leave Youth Reach without completing the course? If so then maybe that is the reason that you may not be eligible for back payment...
