    that's gas.

Man that feeling after a session is brilliant. I call it the "happy happy" feeling. You are physically wrecked but your body is tingling and oxygen debt gives you that nice out of body feeling.

    question:

% wise, how fast do these guys run for the whole 400m compared to their maximum - or are they 'on it' for the entire thing? When you watch them on tv - they make it look so easy, gliding along - when I try that I come out with a 60s time!!

So to do their 40-something-sec runs, are they at 99% of their top speed the whole way or what?

love watching the 400-1500 races. hardy types

I would estimate you are going about 95-97% of your top speed to 200-250 or just over and then its all you have to the finish. The key in a 400 or any race for that matter is to remain calm, relaxed and focus on your own form. Its not about who is grimmacing the most, its who is staying strong and maintaining form. Wariner has a 20.19 200 PB and I think will go through 200 in 400 race in 21.0 and come home in 22.5. Gillick has a 21.21 200m PB and would probably go through 200 in mid or high 21 and come home in over 23.

But this varies from athlete to athlete, some will blast and try hang on, some will sit and then blast. I believe its best to blast 100m, then keep rhytem to 250 and then let her rip to the finish.

I did a session of 4 X 400 m with 5 mins recovery before out in ALSA. Best session i ever did remember been far too fas for my first 400m and never recovered.
But when it was over felt great feeling.. i miss those days now.

There was a youn lad did them with us, Keith Kelly went on to do ok in the US CC , was soem runner back then too.

Still is a great athlete but unfortunately is very injury prone. He qualified for the last Europeans track champs but had to pull out. He won the NCAA cross country in 2000.

Yep I remember him winning that now, He was one of the best i've trained with. Its funny how it turnes out, there was a guy i used to race who was amazing at 16-17 running 4:05 / 4.10 for 1500m but vanished totally .

i was bored last night so decided to try and make these things, didnt turn out too bad at all. Will do for a snack after my lunch time runs in work.

you can do them in the microwave as well and a silicon baking tray is great for reducing the wastage as you try to get them out of the container.

I have always thought the 400m is the hardest race out there. As a kid I was a sprinter. Occasionally they would be a girl short for the 4x400m and I would be made move up a distance. I hated it every single time and used language to the coach that made my parents blush. So much for the expensive convent education.

Yep its hard, but i found the 800 m worse pure pain. It was just a 400 m with another one at the end.. Used to hate and love that event at the same time.

I've never run a competitive 800m.* They knew better than to suggest that. Having said that the 6x800 I did at lunchtime today, nearly killed me!

*I moved straight from the 100m to the marathon...... as you do!

I did the trinity track this year, was no way fit for it, the 800 m nearly killed me but was great. Can't wait for that next year..

I love watching short sprinters doing a leg of a 4 x 400. All is good until about 300m when the lactic starts having a laugh and they realise what kind of situation they have got themselves into it but its too late because they are in a relay, on the home straight, with their teammates cheering them and everyone is looking at them. All lycra wearing ladyboy sprinters should be forced to do it at least once in their career, good for the soul.

Yep nice one, but don't slag off the lycra.. its seems to be helping me with injury.. look out for the fat lad in lycra tomorrow runinng about 41 mins... and prob passing about 20 people over the last 200 m ..
