Does anyone here know anything about EMS / OEM (or whatever it's called) especially in relation to the outsourcing of a custom mobile phone design? Basically I want to get a very specific type of mobile phone built to order for a project I'm working on.

Trap4, you don't give us much to go on, so apologies if I go down a tangent that is not useful for you.
Most of the world's handsets are now developed by ODM's (Lenovo, Konka, TCL, HTC, Asus ...) and EMS' (Flextronics, Sanmina, Simcom, Longcheer, ...) companies rather than branded OEMs (Nokia Samsung...). These former guys make low margins and are driven by high volume projects. Therefore, the volume projections you forecast will directly influence which ODM/EMS will engage (i.e. Tier I, II or III).

Let's assume that you're volumes will be in the 100k units per month range, for example. If so, you'll need to approach the Tier II-III's - Tier I's won't bother. If you're market is Europe, there are some Taiwanese Tier II's that are agressively trying to reach Europe, and may take a punt on a small volume oppty to break into the market. In the past, the likes of ZTE, Konka, HTC have engaged on such "market entry" projects.

If the projected volumes are smaller, then the smaller Tier III's are your only bet. I would have said Benefon, but they have got out of handsets. So try the likes of Dbtel, Quanta, Danger or even Arima.

You'll notice that most of the ODM/EMS guys are in Taiwan/China - that's where the industry has gone. If this doesn't help, give me better clarity on what you're looking for, and I'll try to help.

jerryob, that's undoutedly the most informative answer I've ever received to a question here on boards.ie - thank you very much indeed!

I did do some more Googling after posting the above and am engaged in an email discussion with Flextronics though I seriously doubt my projected volumes will encourage them to engage further, especially going on what you've said. So I'll be checking into some of the other companies you've mentioned.

Once again, thank you very much.

    You're v. welcome, trap4.

Flextronics is under intense competition, so they may be useful, expecially their EU divisions. I've ever only dealt with Flex US, who are historically pure EMS-centric, but have been doing more ODM business to regain market share.

If you're even down in Cork, PM me and I can pass on some contacts across the value chain if needed. I moved industries end'07, so my contactsare going stale.

    Best of luck.
