You should be able to get an s-video to scart cable. That should do the job.

Very cool AC thank you, though is there a hd possibility as scart, i know doesnt do hd

You could get a vga to hdmi adapter then use a hdmi cable to connect it, that should do hd. It won't carry sound though so you'll need an audio cable. 3.5mm jack to composite cable should do that and they cost around €5 last time I checked.

Good stuff AC, knew i kept you around for a reason ;):D

VGA to DVI interfaces are not cheap and unless your graphics driver has HD resolutions available, probably won't deliver a very sharp display as they'd need to scale a VGA resolution to fit.

I connected my laptop to my TV via a hdmi cable and picture perfect but is it true I'll need another cable for sound?? I only connected it, didn't go tinkering with it yet

And what about the other way would I be able to play television on my Laptop and record?

It depends, if your laptop has an hdmi out then it might carry sound as well. If it's just vga or dvi out and you're using a vga/dvi to hdmi adapter then it won't.

Nope you'll need a tv card with the necessary inputs for that.

Ok so i got the vga to scart lead today and have it all connected up and not a sausage! I have put it in both scart sockets on the tv and it isnt coming up on the two scart channels, even did a channel scan (tuning in to see if it picked it up) and still nothing

Turned the display down to 800x600 did another scan etc still nothing.

    Anymore help welcome of course!

Did you put it to one of the av channels?

Yep thats what i meant by the two scart channels, av1 and av2

On most laptops, you have to use a special combination of keys to toggle the video out functions. On mine it's fn + f8. I imagine you would have to do something similar.

Well thats the thing AC i have the scart in scart port 1 on the tv, when i am on av1 and press fn and f8 together there is like a clicking sound (it clicks like 3 times) coming from the tv

Try using fn +f8 a few times. Usually there is a couple of different modes. You have to select the right one.

Right click on the desktop and change it in your graphics card properties. If its a decent graphics card it should be able to detect the region of your tv and configure any dual output you like. Alternatively, rightclick and click settings and turn on the 2nd output, though I would assume that you have already done this.

though I would assume that you have already done this.

Done to death at this rate man its a radeon mobility 9000 have included two screen grabs first one is when i have just right clicked on desktop and gone into the monitor settings when i click "extend my windows desktop to other monitor" or whatever it says the laptop screen goes blank for about 2 seconds and the tv clicks a few times then the laptop screen comes back again (like as if you were changing the resolution)

Second grab is the ati interface itself and it shows the different kinds of connections ie the laptop screen a crt and tv and the tv one has the red x with a picture of a vga connection cable beside it. Does that mean the laptop isnt picking it up?

Also i tried changing the hotkey for switching monitors (on the ati screen) and no joy

No tried it a god few times now just keeps clicking thats it

Yes, a red X means the display was not detected. Last time I used tv out on an ATI card (All-in-wonder Radeon), I remember having to start the computer with the cable already hooked up or I got a red X and it didn't work.

    +1
Had that on an old Radeon 7200

Did you try the s-video -> Composite on the telly?
I didn't see the point in gettnig any conversion cables. (PAL s-video is 352 X 576)

    http://www.vastercable.com/product_info.php?cPath=66&products_id=147

That cable is all you need. Has audio on there too

    Yellow=video
    White & red=L&R sound.

If you have a camcorder you may already have this type of cable
