iTunes won't recognise iTouch

I plugged my 32GB iTouch into my iMac but iTunes didn't auto-launch. I then opened up iTunes manually to see that my iPod wasn't mounted at all. I plugged it out and in a few times. Restarted iTunes. Restarted the iMac. Removed the .plist files for iTunes preferences in order to restore iTunes. None of this worked.

I plugged in the same iTouch into my Macbook and it was instantly recognised by iTunes. No problems on the Macbook at all.

Any ideas on what might be causing the problems? I had a poke around iTunes settings on the iMac but I couldn't find anything that may assist the issue.

Are you plugging into a USB port on the iMac or a hub? I've had problems with various iPods on unpowered USB hubs as there is not enough juice to charge the iPod and it results in it not being detected properly. When you plug it in and the iPod Touch (iTouch sounds SO wrong :D) is locked, do you get the battery charging icon on screen?

I'm plugging it into the back USB ports. I have tried each one. I only have the iTouch and my keyboard plugged in via USB. The iTouch is charging via the USB cable.

is the device registered in the system profiler when plugged in?

    Hi,
Yes, it comes up in the profiler under the USB category.

I had a similar problem with a 3rd. party cable a while back.
Problem cleared up when I went back to standard cable.

I'm using the original cable and it works fine on my Macbook, but not on my iMac.

    hmmmmm.......

perhaps re-intsalling itunes might do the trick, but i'm not too sure that it would. When did it stop working?

    It stopped working yesterday morning.
I haven't installed any new applications or changed the system in anyway.

Is the iTunes up to date?

Had the same happen to my dad's iTouch on his intelMac, too.
Firmware is 1.1.4 IIRC (the first pay-for upgrade).

Have you tried doing a factory reset on the iPod Touch?

Don't want to go down that route if avoidable. I'm away from the iMac until Saturday so I might try one or two things then.

The factory reset should just reboot the iTouch from a cold start. It shouldn't erase anything if the other iPods are anything to go by.

Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes should do the trick.

As far as i know for your ITouch to be recognised you need to have the AppleMobileDevice.exe process running. I think sometimes this loads on PC startup but if unchecked in msconfig it could be your problem.

Go to 'Start', 'Run', and type in msconfig, under the services tab check if the box next to AppleMobileDevice.exe is checked or unchecked

This is the Mac forum. I don't have a PC and I hope I never have to use one again.
    (thanks for the info anyway)

A few months ago, by pure stupidness one day,i disconnected my ipod ( 5th Gen video iPod) without pressing eject. I forgot to press eject. After that happened i had a bit of grief. For the next few months every time i connected my iPod to my iMac, iTunes would not open. So i had to hold down the centre button + the button just under that button on my ipod to open up iTunes, and all was hunky dory then. I got use to this procedure.
But i was shocked one day when i plugged my ipod in and itunes opened up straight away. I don't know if it was an iTunes software update that fixed the problem or i if i did something flukey.
Now i know we have different iPods, but i am sure the 2 buttons i pressed on my iPod is a function on yours. And maybe the next update will fix your problem.
