Hi, I have just bought a new laptop will vista installed, which I am new to, and I have a problem with my USB DVB-T key. For the first few times it kept popping up install drivers, which I hadn't a clue where the were. Finally hours after looking on the net for them I found them, now when I plug in the USB DVB key, nothing happens. I didn't install the drivers, and the program I use still can't locate the USB key, still.
Is there any way I can locate the USB key(tried looking in device manager, no joy:(), its driving me mad now!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Paddy

    Hey Paddy,
The problem with Vista is the device drivers. Vista was released without supporting the majority of peripherial devices. For example I have a pen drive and an external hard drive that work with XP but will not work with Vista I tried to get drivers for Vista with no joy. You need to download Vista compatible drivers if they are available for your USB. You may also have to turn off services to install your device drivers properly. See what info you can get off the manufacturer of your USB. Good luck!

if i remember from my hardware issues when it failed to install a driver in vista
there was an option to stop checking that device when you plug it in future.

Did you try plugging it into a different port or add hardware in control panel?

    Create a system restore point.

Go to Device manager and under 'System' remove any mention of USB (Root hubs, USB controllers, etc)

Say no to any prompting for a restart.

Be aware, if you have a usb mouse it will shop functioning until it's re-detected.

Still under DM, click 'Action' and 'Scan for Hardware changes'

See if your USB device is re-detected. Have the drivers ready.

Did you find a solution, pjjk90?
If not, when plugging the device into a USB port it's worth a try leaving more time for it to dawn on Vista that there's something there.
I don't know what a DVD-T key is, but I struggled for months to get my new Vista laptop to detect a USB modem, until I plugged in the modem ready for another try and went off to do something else. Vista had detected the modem, and the connection worked.
I had gathered that Vista was slow, but forgot (I was used to 98SE).

You could run it (driver cd) in compatibility mode with Windows XP, that way Vista will detect the hardware and update the drivers for you. I agree with The Edge about creating a restore point and installing the drivers manually. You don't have it listed down as unallocated space by any chance do you. It may be hidden and waiting for the drivers.

Try and post something more useful next time. Unless of course you want to buy the op an xp license, back up all his data, install xp and then re-install all his programs for him.

Give me the money and I would gladly do it. Another Mac user in the world is always good to hear... ok, off my Apple Fanboy soapbox I go.

There is nothing un-constructive about telling someone to install XP or purchase a much more reliable system. If I were in his shoes I would do the exact same (and did). If you would like exact lined out procedures on backing up data, installing XP and migrating the data back over, I would be more than happy to provide them to you or the user who has the problem.

Vista is a horrible operating system and would not wish it upon anyone.

The guy is looking for a way to get a device working in vista. Telling him to install xp or buy a mac isn't helpful. Now, back to the topic.

wow, just asking for trouble arent we folks  Vista's a fine OS that suffers from its bad starting reputation. thats all.

The only kind of devices Ive had problems with so far: A single scanner, from 1998. HP refused to support such an old driver, so thats fair enough. business is businees. Support costs greenbacks.

Unfortunately its up to the author of the driver to make it compatible with Vista, and this is without a doubt your peripheral's manufacturer. If you can find a serial number on the device, google that number and you should find the device driverpack fairly quickly.

Its unfortunate that the new OS requires driver modifications but it reflects forward movement in Information Technology. Theres plenty of companies that dont feel its worth the effort to keep up to date, and its Vista that gets the blame.

If the device is relatively new, its an issue you need to take up with your manufacturer.

In your case having found the driver, the device you have is probably seen in the device manager. Go to the start bar and run "devmgmt.msc" If you see any devices with yellow "!" icons next to them: right click those devices and uninstall them.

Restart the computer, wait for the desktop to settle, and try installing the device again. It should either find the driver you downloaded in whatever folder you placed it or you will have to point in there. If the driver has an installer, you will instead have to run that after windows attempts to install the device itself.
