I see Bolt beat Powell in the Jamaican Olympic trials yesterday. Bolt eased over the line in 9.77 while looking across at Powell for last 10 meters 'smiling'. Interestingly Bolt says he still might not run the 100m in Beijing.
American trials also on. I'd be Interested to see how Gabe Jennings does in the 1500 against Webb and Lagat.

Gay ran 9.77 in the Quarter Finals!

By the way, Bolt's time was 9.85.

Here's the full list from the US QF:

    Quarter-Finals
    1 Tyson Gay adidas A 9.77
    2 Travis Padgett unattached T 9.89
    3 Darvis Patton adidas T 9.89
    4 Ivory Williams Nike 9.94
    5 Rodney Martin Nike 9.95
    6 Jeffery Demps unattached 10.01
    7 Mark Jelks Nike 9.99
    8 Xavier Carter Nike 10.00
9 Walter Dix Florida State 10.02
    10 Leroy Dixon Nike 10.02
    11 John Capel unattached 10.06
    12 Chrisdon Hargrett adidas 10.12
    13 Rae Edwards Nike 10.06
    14 Michael Rodgers unattached 10.07
    15 Wallace Spearmon Nike 10.07
    16 Trindon Holliday L S U 10.09

    Did not qualify:
    17 J-Mee Samuels Arkansas 10.09
    18 Shawn Crawford Nike 10.09
    19 Kendall Stevens unattached 10.12
    20 Mardy Scales unattached 10.15
    21 Mickey Grimes Nike 10.22
    22 Teddy Williams Tx-San Antonio 10.24
    23 Rubin Williams Tennessee 10.26
    24 Jeremy Hall Florida 10.26

    Mind boggling, eh?

The wind for each race was +1.6

The women's races produced some astonishing times, too. Torri Edwards ran a legal 10.77 in the semi. Muna Lee, whose previous PB was 11.04, clocked 10.85 to win the final.

    Other notes:
Padgett clocked a collegiate record (i.e. the fastest ever time by someone attending a US college)
Demps set a High School record.
    Patton's previous PB was 10.00

Gay follows up with the fastest ever time for 100m: 9.68 +4.1

This eclipses Obadele Thompson's windy and altitude-assisted 9.69 from 1996!

I wonder what the Jamaican boys are thinking now?

Wow, that is fast even with a bit of wind. I see the first six were all under 10 seconds. 100m will be a must see in Beijing with all these fast times. I wonder will Gay, Bolt, Powell meet in any of the Grand Prix's before the race or will they try to avoid each other.

I'd say Bolt is still probably thinking whether he should or shouldn't do the 100 as he tucks into his chicken and peas for breakfast while Powell is probably going "sh*t Frano, does that mean I have to train properly today, like finish my session".

I love olympic year, everyone just runs so fast.

Gay and Powell are due to meet in London.

Maybe with the pressure off Powell we might finally get to see him perform at a major championship.

Holy Sh*t. Didn't see this until today. Even without the wind I think Gay could break 9.72. But I hope Bolt runs the 100 in the Olympics just to have all the best in the one field.
    Things are getting good

The times in the mens and womens 100m were very fast accross the board - there were a lot of PBs in the semis and quarters when the wind was legal. Conditions were perfect and the track was obviously very fast.

Bolt ran his 9.72 on a wet evening...

The women were pretty fast alright, Veronica Campbell only got 4th in the Jamaican trials but bounced back with a 21.94 in the 200m.

The pics of the various finished are hilarious, look at Bolt turning and smiling at Powell as if he is only doing a buildup in his warmup.

I was talking more about times at the US trials and the times in comparison to other tracks conditions.

I don't think Tyson's legal 9.77 at the weekend is comparable to Bolt's 9.72 in NY last month.

Bolt's reaction to Powell was pretty amusing.

Humidity is one of the factors that affect drag in the sprints. Higher humidity decreases drag and allows you to run faster. Best conditions are very warm, damp and with a nice following wind, all of which Bolt had in NY. It might also be noted that Bolt is much bigger than Gay or the others and would benefit more from the same following wind.

    Interesting paper on this stuff.

All very true, but a wet track most certainly does not make for better conditions in the 100m.

    I'd second that.

We won't know until August when they hit the track for the final when they'll all have the same wind, humidity, altitude. It'll be down to who has it upstairs in the head and that points to Gay at the moment although the way Bolt destroyed him in New York will give him an edge. Thing is, they are all likeable. There is no villian like Christie or Johnson. I'm going to nail my colours to the mast early doors and go with Powell because if he can turn it around from being labelled the periennel choker and win in the hottest 100m year ever then he will be more than a worthy champion. Actually whoever wins will be a worthy champion. Its great, non athletic people are starting to talk about the 100m again for the right reasons.

It is exciting but its a shame the Irish Times has only a snipet about the Bolt/Powell race but dedicates quarter of a page to the ongoing debate about Chambers... Even if Chambers is let go he will be not be a contender!
