Well I finally cracked my screen >_> all to a less than epic knee-high drop. No spectacular fashion here lads.

we all know, bladdy bah blah. Cost vs. Worth. Etc.

HP wants $698.00 to replace the screen and give it a 90 day warranty.

however... $200 and 60 days sounds much more inviting.

But now I'm just thinking wait a second: Its fine that my warranty only covers manufacturer defects; but can I argue that its defective/poor design to enclose a 15.4" LCD screen in what probably amounts to 2 ounces of plastic? I dont even think theres any metal in my lid, besides that found in the screen itself. Anyone whos had a gawk at those Pavillion Laptops knows what im talking about: when you open/close the lid, the LCD screen will noticeable contort and ripple (thats before the damage).

I mean they're already getting hit with one Class Action Lawsuit against their pavillion series: whats one more?

for that price you might aswell scrap it and buy a new one!!!!!!!!!!!!

can you not get a screen somewhere else and fit it yourself?

Go for the $200 one and put it in urself. It could not be that hard. Otherwise use it as a slim desktop.

Only opend this thread because of the hilarious title! however, id say that the $200 option would win out for me. or if you know a good class action lawyer...

Randall: Welcome to HP Total Care Chat Support. My name is Randall. How may I assist you today?

    jon charron: hello randal

jon charron: i was calling in to enquire about HPs repair service

jon charron: see the LCD on my laptop GM816AV was cracked

jon charron: and I was quoted for $698.00 for the repairs

jon charron: however ive been doing some online snooping and as I understand it this charge is to replace my ENTIRE lid assembly

jon charron: when the only thing broken is the Display

jon charron: everything else is in function order from the webcam to the inverter so im wondering what it would cost to ONLY replace the lcd

Randall: Jon, that is unfortunate that the LCD on the notebook is cracked.
    jon charron: yeah :(

Randall: Jon, it is not possible to replace only LCD screen.

    jon charron: well thats unfortunate

jon charron: as i understand it there are at least 3 dozen other vendors with the part for only $180

Randall: As all the other hardware parts which are connected in the display panel assembly are integrated to the LCD screen.

jon charron: so I fail to see the logic behind replacing $400+ of other working componetns

Randall: If we replace only LCD screen , other parts might get affected and may not function properly.

jon charron: now we both know thats not entirely true. ive been reading enough online tutorials to understand the blueprint

Randall: That is the reason whole assembly will be replaced,

    Randall: Okay

jon charron: so im just trying to understand

jon charron: because to me this just seems like a lot of hoo hah to get me to fork up $400 extra greenbacks

Randall: I can understand your concern.

    jon charron: aye.

Randall: I know it is frustrating.
    jon charron: tis

jon charron: at that charge Id rather continue using the damaged part and ride out the end of my warranty, then go to another vendor.

    Randall: Okay.

They love customer retention dont they.

Ive already had the lid opened up here and I wonder if thats why they didnt want me opening it, to find Samsung Products inside? Oooooh scandalous.

Nothing scandalous about that. None of the laptop manufacturers make the actual components themselves. You won't find a single one that will replace a broken screen under warranty unless you took out some kind of accidental damage insurance :/

Do you mind if I ask, what exactly are you expecting hp to do?

just sell me the screen not the whole lid. Save myself $400 or so. Then I wouldve been happy to send it off to them.

Do you not feel comfortable making the repair yourself?

They'd more than likely want to charge you for the repair and possibly quite a lot.

yar. I figured as much. I'll just assume liability for the screen/lid altogether and buy the new one myself.
