It's finally hatched after incubating for years. A terrordactile flew out and ate alive some irrelevant arts students for it's first meal. It then flew off in the direction of the GMB where it has made a nest.

I'm talking about the ridiculous golden sphere/death star, outside the Berkeley library. It is undergoing "renovations" at the moment, which is a front to cover up the truth.

From the pic it looks like they are just fixing the motor/bearings/gearing. Its supposed to rotate you know!

From what I heard its also one of 2/3 around the world. One other being in (the real) Berkeley in UCL I think...

There's a lot more than three of them.

There's one outside the UN building in Washington DC and another in the Vatican.

The sculpture is titled 'Sfera con sfera' (Sphere within sphere) and is designed by Arnaldo Pomodoro. The scuplture itself is often referred to as the Pomodoro or jokingly by students as 'Pacman' or 'the Deathstar'.

Interestingly, Henry Moore's sculpture in Front Square was originally intended to be placed where the Pomodoro stands but Moore refused to have his work placed next to such a ghastly building (the Berkeley) apparently. However, I quite prefer how things worked out, the shadow of Sfera con sfera against the wall of the Berkeley at night is stunning.

More information about Pomodoro can be found here.

Not again? Second time this week. They should put up warning signs or something...

The berkeley is an eyesore, how it won design awards is beyond me.

I agree that the exterior leaves somewhat to be desired. The interior however is quite nice. The law library in particular is one of favourite spots on campus.

An Italian named pomodora is like an Irishman being called potatoe. Not cure it sounds as good though in our language.

Actually I rather like it, compared to the awkward-looking Arts Building beside it at any rate.

Degsy is right - horrible inside and out with crappy wireless connections (in OPUBS) anyway and no sockets.

Plus a large amount of first year bess people seem to '''''''''study''''''''' there

Oh right, good point. I forgot how important Wifi and plug sockets are to the architectural significance of buildings.

its cat looking outside and I don't really see the architectural significance of book shelves, but I would judge it based on practicality, of which it has little.

Sum total: horrible inside and out
