    Hello again all.
    Quick Q:
Ive a small speck of dust on my sensor and want to budge it. I've got the rocket air blaster thing, but can't work out how to lift my mirror!

I've trawled through youtube and google for answers, but found no help for the d80, only he d70 and the d300. I cannot seem to find the 'mirror lock funtion' they all talk about.

Does anyone know how to do this?

    ps
Would it be safe to use a 30sec exposure and shoot then blast with the air???

    Setup Menu.

    Mirror lock up.

Dont blow air at the sensor.

    1/ RTFM

2/ Copy of the Manual is available here Look at Page 125

3/ In a nutshell Menu>Setup>Mirror Lock-up then select OK then press the Shutter Release. Turn Camera off to release.

4/ I have been told, by people that should know, not to use Canned Air to clean a sensor as it can ruin it because of the cold.

See the thread "Camera cleaning advice" for more information.

I wouldnt say its the cold that damages it, its probably the pressure. And what the hell does RTFM mean??

it's the internet - do you really care?

Do I really care? Suppose not. But then I wouldnt respond to somebody like that myself. Just because its the internet, doesnt mean people have to be so damn ignorant. I thought Boards prided itself on being an information and help forum? Yet Ive seen more smart a*sed comments here than anywhere else on the internet. Theres no need for it.

yeah i agree with you, i usually wouldn't reply like that unless it was someone really frustrating.

but i defintely wouldn't let it get to me if someone said that either.

Conkeroo - It's a Joke Joyce .... or does evrything have to have LOL after it? I did then go on to provide the information & even a download site for the D80 Manual, which I downloaded to seek out the proper information.

The person who told me to avoid using compressed air for sensor cleaning stated that it is the cold that can damage the sensor. When gas is compressed it heats up, when that gas then expands it cools down. If you have ever let off a CO2 fire extinguisher then you will have seen that effect. The cans of air do the same thing but on a smaller scale. Apparently that cooling in a small area can damage the sensor, I have not tried it to find out I just take his word for it & also pass on the advice.

Firstly, boards is certainly not the "help forum" of the net.
Yes alot of people do help, but the smart arses far outweigh, sadly.

Second, I don't think RTFM is meant to be rude. But just an observation that its probably a better place to turn to before youtube

I didnt say it was THE "help forum" of the net but c'mon, the same as if someone asked you the time on O'Connell St., you wouldnt say "look at the Clerys f***ing clock". We all have questions and theres always someone who knows more than you, so whats wrong with asking the question and expecting a civilised answer? I dont think there is anything wrong with that at all. I was going to reply to the OP's question because I own a D80 but someone already answered it comprehensively. So why the excess nonsense? See what I mean?

EDIT: But yes Mellor, I know what you're saying.

Cheers for the help to those who did.

As for the manual, mine is in Spanish, as I bought it away from home, so that's why i came on here for help. Didn't know it was available online, to be honest!

The really annoying thing is that Nikon, for what reason I cannot fathom, make their online manuals so that you cannot print them out. I found this out when my brother in law lost his manual for his D50 & I sent him a copy in pdf form. He wanted a copy with the camera to refer to while he was using the camera which, strangely, is not ussually near his computer. The only people who would need a manual would be those who have bought a Nikon Camera, so why stop them printing it out?

Anyway .... alledgedly some "good computer fairies" were able to remove the print restriction & all was well with the world. If you need to contact these "fairies" drop me a PM. ;)

I must say I have liked Nikon products for a long time but some of their business practices do really annoy me.

The d80 manual downloadable from the Nikon.co.uk support section is printable.

if you need a quick fix for the print issue make press 'print screen' button on keyboard and paste the result into word, make the pasted section legible by dragging out the boundary box to fill the page and voila able to print the manual (in sections)

**yes I know not a great solution but one for the less technical out there desperate to get something in print asap

Original Poster, You have to have your battery more than half full to access the Mirror lock up function. After that its easy enough, although actually removing the speck can be difficult.
If you need any help drop me a pm Ill be glad to help you out.

I had the exact problem with my D80 too. its pretty easy to do and the sensor isnt nearly as delicate as some info on the internet will have you believe.
just do the lock up thingy and get yourself a really fine brush with soft bristles to clean off the sensor, i used carl zeiss wipes on a spot that wouldnt come off too. hold the camera facing towards the ground when ya do it too so any loose dirt will fall out., :)
