Pioneer Kuro Plasma 508XD 50"

    This is an unbelievable bargain.

This may be THE best 50" plasma screen on the market (probably only surpassed by the 9th generation Kuro thats not available here yet) at a total knock down price.

Richersounds Irish site doesn't have it but they have said on boards before that anything on the UK site can be ordered here if the customer wants it.

If I had the money..this would be mine in a heartbeat...

Strange specs for the Tv, it is not Full HD ready but yet it states the resolution is 1920 X 1080.

Plasma tvs are better than LCD.

    http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/lcdtv-plasmavslcd.shtml

I'm in the market for a big full HD plasma but not for another few months. This is perfect.

This question has been discussed time and time again on boards and the usual agreement is that it comes down to personal preference(LCD, in my case:D).I would also like to say that it looks like LCD is winning with even Pioneer bringing out their own LCDs in the coming months. They will be available in the plasma screen range and all, >40"

I've never seen any discussions here before. For me its about black levels and high speed stuff.

LCDs are only popular because manufacturers are pushing them as they are cheaper to make.

...And buy.I dont have anything against plasma's.I'd even buy one if i i didnt have a ps3 and 360.You just cant game on a plasma.I tried it and it gave me a major headache.I know plasma's are great for movies and all but i'd say you'de be paying a good bit more for a decent full hd 42" plasma that you would for a decent 42" full hd lcd

Not necessarily true, a high end LCD are just as expensive as a high end Plasma, just look at the price of a Sony W or X series versus a Panasonic plasma.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

I know but i cant imagine the profit margins on high end lcds is any greater than on high end plasmas.Tbh, you nearly have to get half decent one of either.I was in harvey normans yesterday ans saw a 42" plasma for something like 630e.Sound like a bargain but it was totally hopeless for a plasma

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

To be honest these days the differences between LCD and plasma are very small. Instead of focusing on LCD vs Plasma, people should really be looking at competing models.

And with that said the above TV has been widely accepted as one of the best TVs available, and at that price is a steal.

    (I don't have one, I have a 46" LCD, but if I didn't I would seriously consider the Kuro)

You must suffer from that rare enough flicker thing then. Myself and my friend both game on HD plasmas.
Dark games look far better imo.

I would disagree as the best LCD could not come close to the the best plasma, in this case, the Pioneer LX508D, the Full HD version of the 508XD. Blacks are richer, much better contrast, excellent internal scaler... the LX508D is just better quality all round when compared against the best LCD has to offer!

In my opinion, until more LCDs come out with LED backlighting, which allow for a true black, then the crown will be with Plasma displays.

So this is not the full HD model?

So this is not the full HD model?

No it's not i'm afraid. Based upon the model number on the page it is the HD Ready version; although they do state that the resolution is 1920x1080, as mentioned previously, but this is most likely a typo.

    Pioneer 508XD - HD Ready (1366x768)

    Pioneer LX508D - Full HD (1920x1080)

    Hmmm,
wonder if the typo is the model number or the resolution?

Considering that Richer Sounds has the HD Ready Pioneer SX5080D at £1799, the resolution on their site is listed as 1366x768 and with the addition of speakers and a stand, I would say the resolution on the 508XD is in fact incorrect and not the model number, since its price is £1499.

To answer the question definitively, I would recommend calling or emailing Richer Sounds directly.

Guys, John Mc here from Richer Sounds Ireland and yes I have to confirm that the Guys in the Uk have screwed up and the 508 is not, repeat not a full HD TV - I have enjoyed making hay with them about their error (as it's normally us who make the mistakes...:-( ) However it's still a mega mega deal - as I am sure you all know Pioneer TV's are the dogs do dahs and also remember that 'REAL' Pioneer TV's just wont be aound that much longer........Ah Well...

    Hi John,

    Thanks for the clarification.
What do you mean when you say real Pioneers won't be around much longer? Are they stopping plasmas in favor of lcd?

They are outsourcing the production of some Plasma panels to Panasonic.

Ah I see. I know the pioneer plasmas are top notch, but haven't Panasonic been winning best plasma awards for years?
Maybe it's not such a bad thing?

Panasonic are pretty much about 2nd to Pioneer when it comes to Plasma, but they are both facing fierce competition now from the bigger sized LCDs from Sony and Samsung as the gap closes even further with regard to contrast and video processing.

it might be a bargin but by no means Cheap.....

its basically 1500 euro pre shipping..

id hate waiting 7 days for delivery of something that nice... would lose my head due to lack of patience ;)

Sir, you are correct on both counts - it 110% is not cheap but is 120% is a bargain! Yep - just to Clarify - I think everyone agrees it's Pioneer 1st for picture quality followed by the other 'Majors' Panasonic, Philips, Sony (just to be careful I put them in alphabetical order...) But Pioneer have announced that they are to cease production of their own Plasma panels after the new '9' series, which is just being launched as we speak..instead they will use OEM Plasma panels and LCD panels from 3rd party manufacturers - they will however continue to develop and implement their Kuro technology across their range - ie their new range and ranges into the future will not just be 'Badged' clones - they have also just announced a mega projector and a slew of new Audio products. These are not on the pioneer.co.uk site yet - but I'm sure they will e up soon as they were all on public show at the cedia exhibition at Excel last week - if any one would like technical details of the new 9 series just drop me a line and I will send by return, Thanks as ever, John Mc

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Is it true that plasmas consume about four times the power of equivalent LCDs?

Plasmas generally do consumer more power that LCDs but regarding the difference, it depends on the manufacturer and model as some consume more power than others.

Can you PM me the tech specs? When are these bad boys out and how much will they cost? Might be interested in one. I currently have a 43" Pioneer PDP-427XD (bought from your goodselves), which is fantastic and I have no complaints but I would LOVE a full 1080P panel.
