Switch number from one bill pay operator to another?

I'm a bit confused about switching my account/number between two providers. At the moment I'm on a bill pay with Vodafone. The handset itself is beyond unlock/contract period, and I have the unlock code and have unlocked it. The bill is paid by direct debit each month.

I want to buy an iPhone and change to O2 in July. They say I can transfer and keep my number. However I'm just wondering does that automatically cancel the Vodafone contract or do I have to do that separately?

Your Vodafone account will automatically be closed. I did the same with the wifes mobile and I didnt have to do anything with Vodafone

You will require a recent Vodafone bill dated within the last 3 months when signing up to O2. Also passport / driving license.
