How can I diagnose my wireless connection problems?

This is driving me mad. I have a wireless network - Linksys WRK54g. Works fine on the laptops, not a bother, on my PC is it totally temperamental. Sometimes its fine and with a speed test I get the full speed on my 12mb ntl line.

Others I open a few pages in firefox tabs, they can take a minute to show up, or time out.

I have a belkin USB Wireless abaptro which has worked fine for ages. However I'm told they are crap and I should upgrade.

Could it be this, is it worth getting a better one (Any recommendaitons) or could it be somehting else, how can I tell?
    Thanks

It could be the adapter. Im using one on my pc that came with the router, Zyxel, and its crap.
The laptop is much faster opening the same pages with its built in wifi card. Im also on the lookout for a decent internal wireless card for pc.

is your pc wired to the router or is it wireless as well ??

if its wired, try a different cable, maybe its a dodgy cable or connection, seeing as your laptop is working fine, then you know its not an nt.l problem, maybe some kinda malware is causing the problem, has this only started happening recently or have you changed anything and then it has started to happen,

try narrow it down to any changes that you might have made , if nothing rings a bell then run some virus/spyware etc. checks and rule that out.

also try a different web browser i.e IE7 or opera, see if you have the same problem while using them, maybe there is a firefox issue, maybe download the latest version and see if that helps.

Zascar **There is a dedicated thread for this issue in the Net&Comms->Wireless forum**
Well firstly can Mods please move thread to Net&Comms->Wireless.

What is the signal strength for the adapter on the PC (10Mbps, 54Mbps)??
Do a ping of a website using Wireless and also Wired, see how the response times compare (Start->Run->cmd-> type ping www.xxx.xx.xx)
Check a few things on the Wireless on Vista. Right click on the Wireless connection icon in the system tray and ensure the default is your Linksys.
Clear the cache in your browser, Firefox (Temp Internet files etc..)
    DO a scan for malware/virus.
Check your PC is on the same channel as the Wireless router (e.g.Channel 11).
Is your router broadcasting the SSID, ensure the PC is connecting to the correct netowrk's SSID. (Right click on wireless icon on system tray)
Check and see if there is a driver upgrade for the adapter. IF not Try uninstalling the wireless asapter and re-installing the driver.
Check and see if there is a firmware update for the Linksys router
I think is only for laptops but just in case check the power management for the adapter:
Change the wireless power saving setting:
    - Open Power Options in Control Panel
    - Choose Change Settings for the current power plan
    - Choose Change Advanced Power Settings
    - Expand Wireless Adapter Settings
    - Expand Power Saving Mode
    - Choose Maximum Power Saving, Medium Power Saving, Low Power Saving to enable various levels of 802.11 power save modes.
