Car broken into at Garda compound

OK this is the gig... a mate of my son was driving out of Limerick a few days ago - on the Tipperary road- and saw a Garda checkpoint ahead, no tax on the car for a few months so decided to do a quick u-turn back towards the city (silly I agree, he's a good lad, never in any trouble with the law etc, good family and all the rest of it...) within a minute, cop car, lights flashing etc pulls him in, as they would, the Garda says to him "get out of the car,and give me the keys" which he duly did. "why did you turn around?" said the Garda and the bloke said "well my tax was up for a few months and I just panicked ". So anyway, as advised, the car had to be impounded because the tax was up for over 4 months. The bloke had to get his groceries out of the car and had to walk over by a travellers halting site, where there are burnt out cars every night of the week, walk over to his house in Castletroy - 4 miles away, which he did. The bloke went to bail out his car from the Garda pound in Castlemungret 2 day's later, his car was driven out to the front gate by the operator/officer and found that his car stereo and MP4 player was missing! He was shocked and immediately called for a Garda as this was technically a crime scene. He was told by the incumbent officer that he was causing an obstruction and if he didn't remove his vehichle it would be towed away and advised that he should drive to the nearest Garda Station to report the crime, after of course this stage any fingerprints or evidence could be destroyed. It must be mentioned as well that the pound(s) that are used for seizing vehicles are contracted out by an Garda Siochana but it makes you think does'nt it? Can he sue????

Ok, Ok,thats not the point anyway it's not a fcuking major felony, he paid the price and paid for it well but to have your car robbed while under Garda custody is a bit of a joke shop is'nt it!

    True.

I just like to think of it as Karma.

Bit caustic, so if you miss out on your car tax and your property is temporarily taken by the custodians of the state, you deserve to be double, treble, screwed.

Snyper, your attitude like many others is a bit far out.

the man did not get his radio robbed because his car was not taxed, nor because he took that road, nor for any other variables.

he got it robbed because robbers had access to it while it was in the custody of the state.

Incidently, when the official/officer who brought his car out to him offered to get it towed away, I wondered where he would have got it towed to!

You "miss out" on paying car tax for a few days.. maybea couple of weeks..

You dont "miss out" paying car tax for 4 months... thats just taking the piss.

Cars in police componds are cars that are taken from owners not law complient, so you will find little sympathy for your sons friend..

The gardai are not car park attendants..

Just pass on the message - tell him to suck it up and lesson will be learned hopefully.

(Im only being caustic, due to the fact that rb is not logged onto boards now.. he off duty and im filing in for his shift)

Maybe he should have used the money he was saving on tax to pay for a taxi.

4 months is taking the mickey. But that doesnt justify what happened to his jammer while is was locked up.

Sounds fair to me. Missing out on car tax would be maybe a day or 2. No car tax for a few months is refusal to pay it so maybe karma was at play.

Might have been an idea to remove his valuables from the car before allowing the garda to take it to the impound. Mobile devices and stereos are prime targets for thieves....I agree it's just not on that it happened whilst in the charge of the State, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time...gardaí are unlikely to give much creedence to your son's complaint either.

Too many people are confusing a link with his non payment of tax with the theft of his stereo. They are 2 seperate incidents.

OP Id ask a solicitor, I'd well say he might have a case against the company that runs the compound. They might even have a sign up stating they are not responsible for any loss or damage but the owner of the car was coerced by law to have his car taken there so I'd say there is a duty of care upon the compound owners to ensure that the car is looked after.

The Garda obviously know full well that cars get broken in to while in the compound. So, you either try and do something about it (and probably not get very far), or just forget about it.
