RTÉ test card

I found this photo on a DX website, picked up from Maghera:

    http://www.tv-dx.de/vhf_1/rte_ireland.htm

Would this have been in the pre-RTÉ 2 days judging by the identification and the location of it? It looks a bit unusual to me as I've never seen RTÉ use the top section of the PM5544 for station identification.

I saw another strange card on a different site a long time ago, it was a colour bar test card with "RTE Limerick" on it. It was another DX grab from Maghera in its Band I days.

Could be totally wrong, but I seem to recall that there was an experiment by RTÉ with local broadcasting (in the late 1980's, I think), with programmes being broadcast from Maghera. Maybe the "RTÉ Limerick" card dates from then? Or maybe not :O)

In the very early days of the PM5544 colour testcard RTE superimposed a sans-serif 'RTE' caption (possibly letraset!) in the top letterbox. It wasn't until 1976 or so that they used a simple electronic 'RTE' caption in the lower caption field. I guess this picture must date from 1973 or 1974.

The RTE Limerick card may well be a feed ident that got transmitted somehow.

The majority of people in County Limerick AND Limerick city would have been receiving from Mullaghanish, not Maghera. (predating 'Woodcock Hill' transmitter)

Woodcock hill was in the way for many Maghera. Where Woodcock didn't block the signal, Maghera was better.

Thus parts of Clare used Mullaghanish too. Some Co. Tipperary on one or the other.
    Some West Limerick Maghera still.

They did Regional TV with archive material for the regions for the 25th anniversary of the opening of TE.

Newcastle West can receive either Maghera or Mullaghanish.
