My brother sent me this by email...

I was playing it last night and I had just completed GTAIV (well the main story bit) and I turned it off. Then I later went to turn it on but....nothing. The monitor doesn't pick up any signal from the console anymore (though I know for sure the monitor works and the scart connector seems to work fine) The ring on the xbox hasn't come on- it's not the 'Red Ring of Death' in fact there are no rings at all. Just the power light comes on. I think (through some research on-line) that the VGA component in the console has melted (I may be a little hypochondriac but I could swear I smelt some vague burn smell last night while I was playing)

Is vga the only component he has? it seems like the link between the console and tv has broken down. can he try use the scart leads that would of came with the console and see if that works. then if it does then you know its to do with the components.

Have you tried it on a regular tv? The chances are it won't work on that either. Happened to me, had sound but no picture. Basically the GPU came away from the motherboard (as far as I know this is the same as the 3ROD).

Thanks for the replies, he's sent it off for repair. I hope MS spends more time in R&D before they're next machine comes. So many lemons

Big time. Many of the RROD are caused by the ****ty x-clamps. Can't see why M$ haven't revised this by now. I had RROD recently and used the x-clamp fix - been working perfectly since then!
