Where is most common to find rust on them, mechanically what to look for?

Loads and loads of buyers guides available. Parkers.co.uk maybe a good place to start. Official owners club may be another good source.

A couple of things to look out for, just a couple of tips, nothing definitive:

Rear suspension arm bushes get hardened and cracked, resulting in shudder from the rear, noticeable on cornering. Not too expensive but will take a couple of hundred euro.

Look out for rust in and around boot sills, at the run off.

Then all the usual - white smoke on start up, gummy oil on the oil filler cap.

A complete tool kit in the boot is always a sign of looked after beamer.

    Enjoy.....

give the powersteering a full go.... lock to lock and see if you hear any funny noises aswell as the master cylinder seems to be quite weak in these so check the bite point....

apart from that do as instructed below and your should have a nice braverian motorway muncher.
