Seriously starting to consider doing the Connemara Ultra next year and just wondering what the course is like, well how it's marked out as there isn't a large number doing it ala Dublin as I don't want to take a wrong turn and get lost especially if I'm about 32 miles in.

I know that Connemara is meant to be though, I was thinking of trying the half there next year, marathon the year after and the ultra the year after that but I'm DYING to do an Ultra and Connemara leaves me with a decent length of time to gee myself up for it.

you won't get lost. 3 right turns and there will be a steward at each one. There will also be loads of people as you get further into the course so absolutely no problems. AFAIK, connemara is the biggest half marathon in the country, plenty of people.

hi mp1972 im in the same boat as i would love to do an ultra at some stage.but feel at the moment im not expeirenced enough as ive only done 2 marathons , dublin will be my third . have you done many marathons or have have much running behind you. maybe im wrong but i feel you nearly have to serve your time on a few marathons before graduating to an ultra like i said maybe im way off and if your capable of an ultra thats it .just wondering is there a criteria for accepting entry for ultra marathons or is it as open as a marathon?

Having done it I concur. I think they have one citeria of having done a marathon in less than 5 hours.

I am exactly in the same boat as yourself. I did the full this year, and feel i would like to try and go the extra 13miles...Though, the big hills (at Leenaun & Hell of the West) are in the 1/3rd part of the ultra race, and that's hard.
So, i am going to register for the ultra but will commit to it closer to the race depending on how the training goes (26 weeks plan). The beauty is that organisers allow transfers between races up to 01st March or so.

My 2cents recommendation would be that you do the full connemarathon first.
