just a newbe to this camping lark, but very interested in importing from germany esp. with the VRT so cheap.

I know the unladen 3000kg rule, 1.8 metre internal height and also the cooker sink rule. My problem is that many of the motorhome for sale websites to not list what the unladen weight is (with one exception Ive come accross.) to a lesser extent the same applies to the berth capacity. It can be very annoying to find one of suitable weight only to find that its berth capacity is smaller that I am looking for - 6, in my case.

I have a €15k budget. and ideally, for peace, would like one with a u shaped rear lounge... any suggestions>
    thanks

Unladen weight is a bit tricky as (German) legislation has changed over the years and isn't very precise either.

    The old system:

A sample vehicle was weighed ready to drive, with oil and fuel on board and an assumed driver of 75 kg. That weight was entered into the licencing documents. Different models (depending on options and accessories) would come in a good bit heavier, but the sample weight was still used

    the new system

A sample vehicle is weighed with tools, 90% fuel, 50% water, 50% gas, and an electrical lead, no driver and that makes the "empty" weight of the vehicle in the documents. A deviation of +/- 5% from that "official" weight is still legal

Neither of the above weights usually depicts the true empty weight of the vehicle, especially not the "empty weight" in the VRT sense (no water, no driver, just fuel on board)

The only way to find the real empty weight of your prospective vehicle is to do what the VRT people do and weigh it on a weighbridge ...unfortunately.

Just wondering lads, when you discuss unladen weights, is it for VRT purposes or for Driver Licencing purposes?

Usually for VRT purposes. Above 3000Kgs Vrt is approx €50. Below 3000Kgs and it's approx 13%.

This might help you , on the older German "Log" books look have the word Leergeweichts, (unladen weight) it must be 300KGs to make the 3 tonnes weight, also the Gross Vehicle weight must exceed 3500, The revenue will seek a supervised test on any camper under 3050 coming before them, if the weights do not match up, for example if the German log book says Gross 3200 and the person pitches up with a 3050KG , the vehicle is illegal, The vehicle can be confiscated and a very hefty fine is imposed. so be very careful what you buy in Germany 6 Berth campers is the rule of thumb they usually make the weight, but not always, the continentals try to reduce the weight the Irish need to have it added on, What a country:confused:

    Sligo camper.

We bought in Germany 3 years ago.
    Burstner delfin 680. Low profile.
    Unladen weight 3010Kg. Max 3500kg.
We weight at weighbridge and brought MH and docket to Customs.
    No problems.
    €50.

When you are bringing in MH to Ireland it has to be.
    6 months old.
    6000km.
1.8mts in height inside at lowest point.
    Over 3 ton unladen.
    Then it €50.

    Good luck and safe travelling.

Does this mean if the van is new you pay the same 13% VRT as the smaller camper vans ???
