grand ol purchase go for it

once you know theres no af on 500mm 1.8, if your starting out that means nothing to you... but it basically means ONE of many many possible lens wont work fully on it, it will work just in manual, which is doable but not ideal.

yeap, you are right, , means nothing to me :-)
but looking it up, i presume that i can manually focus it.
I wonder can i find out a list of len;s that will work fully with it ?
would Nikon publish a list ?
    looking on their website now

basically the lens needsa motor built in, thats 95 per cent, so dont worry, its just the 50mm is is so cheap and a sorta 'must have' but manual focus is grand, thats the only downfall to it, i couldnt praise it better otherwise

It's a great camera, the only problem is the lens issues which isn't a problem because it has a rangefinder. I'd recommend it anyway.

I never said it rectifies it, it's does however make it a lot easier to manual focus, even compared to the D40 which only has the green light.

I think the poster meant a viewfinder and at a guess, meant that it's easier to focus manually using such.

No, on the D60 when you use a manual lens the exposure meter (+____0____-) in the viewfinder becomes a rangefinder, telling how far left or right you need to turn to be in focus, which is a lot handier than the green dot in the D40
