My little brother is in his first job. It's quite badly paid as last year according to his P60 he earned 14,800 and piad nearly 4,500 in tax. Is this too much tax to pay for such a small amount? I think earning such small money he should be getting it tax free. Can he claim it back?

    From this site:

    Personal Tax Credits 2007

    Single Taxpayers
    Personal tax credits of €1,830
    PAYE tax credit of €1830
Income Tax after subtracting deductions from total pay:
    20% on the first € 35,400
    41% on the balance

Don't really know too much about this, but he had paid 30% of his gross, which does appear to be high but I don't know how much PRSI contributions, and possibly pension contributions etc could add up to as well.

The first port of call should be his payroll / HR department, and they can confirm that they have his PPS number and they have given it to the revenue. I'm sure they'll be able to help him out.

H can get it back if he has overpaid.

All he has to do is request a balancing statement from the Revenue, and he'll get back what ever extra he paid, if any.
