Went along to a gig partly organised by a mate of mine on Tuesday night. There were 5 bands/acts in total so i have a tonne of photos to process. The last band were my favourite so I processed their photos first (although still not all done). All shot with the 40D and 50mm 1.8

Thanks a mill guys for checking them out. I'll have the rest of the bands up over the next week although I don't think they are as good as the ones I have done so far.

Great stuff bovril. Amazing shots. They are incredibly sharp - did you shoot wide open on the 50mm or was it bright enough to increase the DOF a little?

Thanks. I tried not to shoot wide open. During certain songs I had to. I was also doing a lot of experimenting with shutter speeds, lowering the shutter to 60 and making the aperture smaller to see if I could capture movement. That didn't really work. Exif data is available on flickr. The middle shot above is wide open. The other two aren't.

The lighting was fantastic for all 5 bands/acts actually. Much better than any other gig I've be shooting at. The 2nd act was a guy playing acoustic guitar on his own. I was getting away with ISO 400, F4 and shutters of 320ish if I remember correctly.

The Button Factory is alright for lighting actually....though when it is bad in there it is BAD!!! Still, after shooting two weeks ago in the Sugar Club i'm pretty sure that is about as bad as lighting could ever get!

Kinda helps when you know the lighting guy and you can ask can he do stuff for you ;)

very good , particularly shot 2 which is the most striking --

does anyone else shoot on mode S , after a disaster i will never go under 200 of a sec , too difficult to hold steady under 150 of a sec

    neigh

never shutter priority, always manual or ap priority, low light can be a front bum with gig shots, i'd knock up the iso til the cows come home to compensate for shutter lag

oh and i'd usually be circ 30th a sec on most shots... prob why they aint this sharp

i probably always do things arseways -- but its such a panic , with pushing & sweat & beer -- even on the d 300 , i hate going above iso 800

    Thanks all for the comments.

@thebaz - Shutter speed all depends on the lens you have on at the time. If you're using say a 50mm and the subject is not fast moving then you should be able to get away with handholding it somewhere around 1/60. Practice will tell you exactly what shutter speed you can handhold with. If you have a zoom lens on you'll have to use a faster shutter speed.

@mele - I'd never say never go to shutter priority for gigs. I generally don't ( and I haven't done many gigs so choose to take what I say with a pinch of salt). The reason I was on shutter for some of them was a mistake on my part. I was using the flash earlier on with shutter priority for some shots of friends and I switched the flash off and forgot to change to manual. Having said that, I found nothing wrong with shutter priority because I had the light for it to pick the correct aperture.
