NTL broadband USB connection problem

I'll try to sum this up as well as i can.

I have NTL broadband and a linksys router. My desktop stopped recognising the connection through the ethernet cable a year ago. I started using the USB cable instead and that worked fine. (I think my integrated ethernet card has stopped working, as unlikely as that my be)

All my USB ports were knocked out of action following a storm. The computer shop fitted a PCI card with 4 USB ports.

All my other devices connect fine through the new USB ports once again, except for my modem.

When i plug the USB cable from my modem into the computer it shows that it's found new hardware but then quickly says that it's malfunctioned.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the installation cd v 1.1 for the drivers to no effect.

The modem is working fine (i think) because i can connect to the internet with my wireless devices.

Any help? Do i need a new cable, or new drivers? What would that cable even be called? I went looking online but the nearest match (visually) i could find is actually a printer to computer USB.

    Any help much appreciated guys.

Why not buy a new ethernet card? If you have a free slot for it that should work fine - they should only cost about €15 or so at max.

Have you ever checked the 'old' ethernet card since? It is possible to reinstall those and that might get it working for you.

just purchase a PCI ethernet network card, that should do the trick probably more reliable than the USB. As was already said they are not expensive to buy around €20.

    Ok, sounds like a plan.

Is it as easy as; buy card, plug into computer, watch internet come storming onto computer?

Apologies for the last post, that was far too lazy.

I've just looked up the installation of ethernet cards and i know what it entails now.

Thanks for the help, i got stuck on trying to fix the internet through the USB and didn't think of just getting a new card.

It is very easy to install PCI ethernet card. Just be careful to ground yourself by touching the chassis to stop any short. The PC will recognise the new hardware and will ask for the installation CD for the device drivers. Pop that in and way you go back on the 'interslice' surfing away!!
