You do know HD DVD lost the format war don't you? You do know there'll be little or no more new movies coming out on that format?

    No?

yea i do know that..that why everything is going on the cheap..getting the departed for 7 euro and planet earth for 30 is a bargain like.Planet earth would at least be 80 and the departed 30 on blu ray.Can anyone explain why the departed wont work and why transformers will.

I always thought that hd dvd was region free

So Did I , but in fairness , the add on Amazon that you linked clearly states that the disc is region 1 so you have no comeback ... Cest la vie !

but as i have said the link to transformers clearly states that it is region 1 as well and that works fine

Your link to the transformers item specifically states region free ( actually it says all are region free ) however your link to the amazon item clearly states that the disc is not region free and wont play in a non region 1 player , so for some reason that particular disc is region coded , strange , cos Ive never seen one before , but there it is.
They may both have a region code on the box indicating where they came from , but it could easily be the case that only the departed is actually region coded. Amazon have that warning on the departed but not on other items I see , so they are covering themselves there.

Oh an just an aside , but the planet earth blu ray is 34 euro in Zavvi in Newbridge , it has been in or around that price since christmas ! I'll grant you it was about 80 when it was released , and up to about christmas , but afterwards its always been 40 or less , and even better prices online.

The departed blu ray in the same shop was 18 euro , cheap for a bricks and mortar shop here , but still way too much , its only 12 online.

Googling the ASIN throws up several sites that describe this release as a combo disc. Would this have something to do with it?

    Hey Fol,

I have the departed from the same american HD-DVD import.

Its a combo-disc, so hddvd on one side and region one sd dvd on the other.

Make sure you have the disc in the tray with the HD-DVD (its printed on the spindle in the middle) label facing upwards and you should be all set.
