I'd like to setup wifi in my apartment but I don't have a PC that I can connect the wireless router to. I have a laptop but wiring it to that would obviously defeat the purpose.

I have magnet, so there are plenty of standard network sockets around the apartment.

So, my question is: can I just buy a wireless router, stick in a network cable, tuck the router away on a bookshelf or something and then my laptop and ps3 will be able to detect the wifi and connect to it?

edit the 2 routers im looking at are:

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=308929
    and
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=306148

would either of these do the job do you think?

Both should work fine. Plug the Magnet ethernet cable into the WAN port on the router and it should collect the needed info (address, DNS server etc.) Don't forget to turn on WPA encryption and turn off SSID broadcast.
