    http://www.tuaw.com/2008/06/25/o2-pay-as-you-go-iphone-plans-announced-un-announced/
UK mobile provider O2 posted a page earlier today offering the iPhone 3G with a pay-as-you-go plan costing £300 (≈ $593) for the 8GB model, and £360 (≈ $711) for the 16GB model. The plan includes six months of WiFi and browsing. After the first six months, you can purchase browsing and WiFi access for £10 (≈ $20) monthly. The offer is available to all new and upgrading customers who purchase an iPhone 3G with Pay & Go until December 31.
The page, however, was taken down moments later, replaced with a page that omitted pricing. Some of the other pages (Tariffs, for example) were not found on the server. Strange. The page says that more information "will be available shortly so come back in a few days."
Your conspiracy theories are always welcome in comments.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I'll be picking one up if this is the case.

Was thinking of just biting the bullet and getting it with o2 but only noticed recently (Bit slow....) that o2 have changed the way their tariffs work. They don't allow to carry over mins or texts anymore?
The tariff I am currently on allows me to do that, I have over 300 mins clocked up and 150 texts along with 250mb of data (data doesnt carry over)
I am definitely not going with O2 now as I don't fancy losing all the minutes I built up. Bloody rip off they are.

I dont think there are many companies that do carry over, three dont do it and I am nearly sure vodafone stopped doing it a couple of years back, I could be wrong though.

Something you might be interested in guys - Meteor have just launched a 3G trial for their PAYG customers in Dublin. Sign up in any Dublin store and they'll give you free 3G access till the end of August, €50 credit upon registration and a further €10 each month after that. In return, you'll be asked to give feedback to Meteor and TNS/mrbi every few weeks.

You keep any free credit that you might have due to you from a previous upgrade as well as all your offers - free texts, phone a friend for free, etc.

When the trial ends, you obviously start paying for data at an as-yet-unannounced price. But since this is PAYG you're free to jump ship if it's a rip off.

See this thread for more info.

I'd be sold on this if I hadn't recently reverted to my opinion that the iPhone is underfeatured and way too locked down (no VoIP over 3G for example). Plus there's too many little things that annoy me about it. But for anyone planning to get an iPhone 3G I think this is a sweet deal! :D

Same here. I only re-signed recently and they still ccarry over. Every way they can think of gouging for the iPhone they do it. I hope they are left with a shedload of stock they can't sell. I was looking forward to getting one in August but the changes to their sales policy look to have scuppered that now.

I think they're making people sign a contract before giving them iPhones anymore, which means you can unlock it but you've still got to pay the contract!

Not if you buy it on PAYG up north. €378 for the 8GB model according to an O2 UK page that mysteriously appeared and disappeared the other day.

True, but I don't think they're going to offer the 3G ones like that. Apparently it's a new Apple policy, no iPhones without a contract.

They are. It's only the 3G ones that are available on PAYG. Have a look at the o2.co.uk website for (scant) info.

    Interesting ;)

Some mates are interested in upgrading their dodgy iPhones to 3G versions... I'm already with O2, so I'll just switch to an iPhone when they're released.

WTH happened to the "199$ global" price? :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,032 ✭✭✭colm_c

I think it's more of a from $199, if you pay for a higher per month package the handset cost is reduced.

Aren't O2 UK PAYG phones still locked to O2 UK for 6 months anyway? So even if you bought one in the UK, you'd still have to jump through whatever the unlock process will be for the iPhone 3G? Not much of a hassle if it's as easy to unlock as the original one now is, but the iPhone was pretty messy to unlock yourself the first few months...

On another note, anyone here have the original iPhone with O2 Ireland? I'd be very interested to find out if they will allow people to upgrade to the 3G by signing a new contract, even though the original 18 month one is not up (something AT&T will be doing in the US)... effectively resetting your contract. Because I have 6 months left on Vodafone and buying a V2 iPhone in January would only be about 6 months away from V3...
