Dell Media Direct reinstall

    Hi,
I have a Dell XPS M1710 running XP. I had Windows reinstalled as it didn't seem to be working right. After the reinstall, Media Direct was missing.
When I put a DVD in I was told there was no DVD decoder installed so I installed Power DVDSE. When I tried to watch a DVD it was very jumpy, sound and picture.
Does anybody have any ideas why or how to cure? I looked into reinstalling Media Direct but it seems complicated and I'd probably make s*** of the computer.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks.

does your pc see the dvd? can you explore the disk files?

Yes. When I right click and click explore two folders, AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS, are there.

When you reinstalled the system did you install the drivers for your video card ? By default Windows will install crippled MS drivers for most cards which would cause the effect you're getting.

Right Click on My Computer > properties > Hardware > Device Manager. Click on the + sign beside the Display Adapters listing. Double click on the first item in that list then select the Driver tab. If the driver provider is listed as Microsoft then you'll need to get the proper driver.

While in the device manager just check for any yellow exclamation marks next to any of the devices especially the IDE/SATA entries.

The driver provider is Nvidia so I assume I have the right driver.

Tried latest Media player, GOM player and VLC Media player. Same problem, jumpy picture and sound. Could it be a problem with the dvd drive?

Download a couple of video files (game or film trailers should do) and play them. If they work fine then it would look like a problem with the dvd drive.

also try a few different dvd,s. do you still have the problem. get the latest video driver and reload it. as AlmightyCushion said if you can play a video file on the hdd it has to be the dvd player. open the dvd tray. look at the lens for any dust etc.
