It's a title often used in a MMA figther's stats etc. I have searched in Google but can'nt get much anything regarding the actual winning of the title but just info regarding All American Wrestling clubs, camps and supplies etc. Is it an actual grading sort of system eg. been a state or university winner, or do you have to have been a nationwide champion to get the title of All American ??

AFAIK all-american implies you won the national championship. I could be wrong though.

I was under the impression that an all american wrestler competed at the national level as opposed to an all american champ. AFAIK.

    Yeah, like the All Irelands.
Does it mean they won State, though?

I think that's the distinction between Brock Lesnar and someone like Gray Maynard, Brock actually won at the highest level (outside of the Olympics I guess).

I'm pretty sure anyone who wrestles in the NCAA (National Coligiate Athletics Association) division 1, is considered an All American, examples are josh kosheck, Lesnar, Mark Coleman, i think Fitch was aswell not sure though.

The top eight wrestlers in each weight class in the NCAA tournament each year are "All Americans"

EDIT: It's not just NCAA Division I either, you can be a top eight wrestler in Division II or III (not sure if there's a IV...) and be an All American

to follow on from what fozzy was saying, you can be an all american footballer, basketball player, baseball player.

i know this isn't reletive to ma directly, but "all american" seems to be a title that top level college sports people are awarded

Exactly, there are different divisions too though, ie the top guys are "Division 1 All Americans"

In the UFC this includes guys like Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes, Gray Maynard etc.

The winner of each division becomes the NCAA Champion (Kevin Randleman, Brock Lesnar, Josh Koscheck)

Then above that is the Olympics (Henderson, Lindland, Gardner etc)

Greco guys are slightly different though, I think. For instance, Randy Couture would be an infinitely better wrestler than some Div 1 guys liek Chuck or Tito but he wasnt an All American.

Yeah, it's the NCAA who decides who the All Americans are as they run the competitions. For football and other team sports they rely on certain publications and associations I think and they pick a sort of all-star team. For wrestling it's just the top eight
