I was playing there at the weekend and I hit one of many terrible shots( but thats beside the point, beer and golf doesnt work!!)

Any getting back to point, I hit the ball a bit right and it went into the trees where there is an out of bounds as well.
Found my ball but it was stuck in the fence a few feet in the air, what is the ruling on that?
As i wasnt marking a card, i just played it as it lied, but was it out of bounds?

Depends really, all of the ball has to be out of bounds. If there were white stakes and the ball was behind these then you would be out. The out of bounds line works from the inside (course side) edge of the stakes.

is the fence in bounds, out of bounds or the out of bounds marker?

If the fence is the out of bounds line then the full ball is unlikely to be out so to answer the first bit, you're in play.

Secondly, as the fence is a man-made object embedded in the ground, my understanding is that this is classed as an "immovable obstruction" from which you can take relief without penalty. It makes no odds whether the ball is stuck up in the fence or just near the foot of it. If an immovable obstruction is anywhere in the way of your swing or stance you can take relief.

Paths and permanent tee markers are other examples of immovable obstructions. I'm fairly sure boundry fences are either in the rules as IOs or are covered by the vast majority of local rules.
