    hi there
I broke my wrist last week, am i insured if i drive? Do I need to inform the insurance company and do i need a letter from doctor to confirm my ability to drive?

I am after getting two different answer from the insurance company regarding this, first one said I could not and the second said no problem once the doctor confirmed it so a little confused.

i'd suggest getting something in writing from the insurance company. Sounds like they're not too sure either.

You are covered if you are medically fit to drive. It would be up to the doctor to state that you shouldn't drive.

    RTDH is right.

I work for an insurance company (I.T. Dept.) and broke my wrist.
They said as long as the doc said i could drive then it was ok. But get this in writing as words just don't cut it.

Also, different Insurance companies may have different opinions - Mr Qui** might put up a fight over a claim where the driver had a medical condition!

I had exact same problem earliuer this year.

A medical cert from doctor should cover it - as long as insurance company OKs it.

Doesn't whether you also feel capable of driving safely with your wrist/hand/whatever in plaster enter into it? I know that when I broke my hand a few years ago, I decided I just wouldn't do it .. it just didn't feel safe to me. I've no idea what my doctor (or my insurance company) had to say on the matter .. I didn't even ask either of them.

Unless you broke your left hand and drove an automatic, I don't know how you couldn't be impaired.

I have a cast on my right thumb with 4 fingers and some of my palm free. I can write by holding the pen in my fingers and using my cast as a fulcrum. I feel like I could grip the wheel with my fingers. Am I fit to drive a manual car?

As a qualified doctolerogist I say you should be fine but I recommend some follow up appointments to see why you blanked the advice in this old thread to get a doctor to certify you as ok to drive and making sure the insurance company is okay with that.

I was originally told before my operation that I wouldn't be able to drive for 8 weeks (2 weeks ago) but I forgot to get clarification after the operation. I was talking to a surgeon today (I tutor his son) who said that I should be fine. I have a follow up on Thursday but it would be really good if I could drive this week. Not sure if I need to get permission from my doctor or just to go ahead. Taking time off to go to doctor before Thursday would cause too much hassle at work as I have already had time off post op.

*shrugs* Your call, your money if you crash and try to claim. No one on the interwebs can say you're A: safe to drive and B: you'll be covered by your insurance company.
