Waiting on an answer

    Folks,

Went for a second interview last week which went ok. Was told they would contact me early this week i.e. Monday/Tuesday whether it be good news or bad. Postman has been all three days but no Dear John letter. However not a sausage by way of phonecall in the affirmative and the waiting is doing my head in. Should I ring their HR and get a definitive no or just wait for the inevitable letter from the postman regardless of whether it might be next week at this rate?

it's not unusual for companies to be lax about getting back to people - consider the fact someone may have had to re-schedule the interview for early this week - it pushes their decision back as well. (companies don't tend to think about people waiting for an answer unfortunately)

I would continue to job hunt, and wait for an answer until tuesday/wednesday next week and then give them a call if nothing heard by then.

When there is a delay after a second interview, for me it means they're not interested. This is based on experience. Never waste time thinking otherwise as this is just procedure and nothing more and your job search should be too.
I have got myself in twist a number of times thinking about what I would do when I start a job to find I don't get it any way. Don't think you have a job until you have accepted it. Job offers have been taken back a number of times from people I have read here on Boards.

just my 2 cent. sorry its not positive. But it might help.

This is likely. If there's a delay, it can mean that it went well, you've been shortlisted, but they're not going to give you anything firm until the best guy says yay or nay.

It may also be just a delay on their end - wranglings over money or re-scheduling interviews, or holidays and so forth.

I had a recruitment agent delay a decision on a job for me by nearly a week. Turns out the company wanted to hire me extra (i.e. they had three spots but wanted to hire me as no. 4), but the agent wanted to charge them extra for hiring me. The company refused to pay it, so I got turned down.

There are a number of reasons that could cause a delay in getting back to you.

the person making the decision could be on holiday or sick.
the HR rep responsible for notifying you could be on holiday or sick.
Another interview may have been re-scheduled for a later date.
There might be wrangling over what salary they can offer you.

    etc etc

In short wait and see what you get from them, in the meantime if roles come up that interest you then by all means go and interview for them. Always keep your options as open as possible.
