Anyone here been to Australia, China, Japan or New Zealand with a small child?

I am thinking of going away for a few months next year and am looking for some travel advice. What's the best way to keep costs down. I looked at ticket for two adults and one kid to Australia and it came to EUR4,500!

When is a good time to go and what destinations are good for kids (around three years of age)? Basically I am just looking to hear from some people about their own experiences and recommendations.
